The NYT covers India's new political trend: eunuchs. One eunuch was elected mayor of Katni as a joke. Several more eunuch victories followed in other cities. Now there are plans for a national eunuchs party. Generally male in build but female in manner (and yes, lacking that), eunuchs hold low social status -- electing them is a jab at the establishment.

"People here were just so fed up, they said, 'Sure, let's have a eunuch,' and there wasn't much thought about which one," claims an Indian official. "Voters seem to trust us," says a eunuch.

Maybe it sounds better in Sanskrit?

Exactly why in Indian culture are there eunichs except for motorcycle accidents?
I know the Italians used to make them for
choir singers but I suspect that is not a factor in India.

No - actually I don't follow those types of scandals, but I seem to be the only in North America who didn't. I didn't even follow the Monica Lewinsky saga (or the O.J. saga either).

stockticker: don't be too sure! From abc.com news story:

"It turns out, not all the eunuchs in India have actually been castrated. Some are probably gay men, others transsexuals. They have no other community to join in India’s conservative society, and can find a home living as a eunuch."

I meant personal sex scandals, Irene.

(can't believe I misspelled eunuchs in the title)

Can sex scandals be impersonal... ummm how does that work?

Now, now Ken. We all know it's content that counts, not spelling.

Do they have gelded temples in India?

Here's something I found on eunuchs in India. Don't know how true this stuff is. Also, there are a couple of pictures on the bottom that not everyone might want to see.

I wonder if they have Unix in India?

Isn't that how Jesse Ventura got elected?

Irene I find the sex scandels great fun. Politicians have been "doing it" to us for years it's about time they had to own up to it.

Well, Canadian politicians are boring. Their sex life must be boring too because no one ever bothers to write about it. The political scandals here usually involve money (kick-backs or wastage).

Looney, This is AW. I am not fer sure if you can say "penis" here anymore. Things have been a changin' here lately. There's a new improved sheriff in town and she don't be liken' bad words.

Eunichs and Eunuchs were turned in to fat chicks themselves I hear the process tends to do that.

Penis is probably OK, just so long as one doesn't choose to try disguising it with asterisks. Clearly, all can see how offensive that would be.
