You can declare it a sovereign nation and petition the UN for admittance.

Was it a bad one?

I might, but I abhor politics.

It was strong enough that there will be a minor exodus of Nebraskans returning to their homeland in fear.

Rome trembled.

Was it the one in the East Bay at 7:41?

That was only a 3.5. I think the state is safe.

Yeah, but no Nebraskan in CA will FEEL safe.

It's only the prelude. San Andreas is overdue.

Too small to feel it on this side of the Bay. It better not be a prelude, doing the Oakland Flea Market tomorrow.

I also hope there really aren't any bombs at De Anza College doing that flea market on Sat. Thank goodness for that girl developing those pictures.

The whole area's building tension.

Here's a map showing the general fault systems in California and Nevada, plus the latest earthquakes:

http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/

Basically, California is on two different plates. The coastal plate, to the left of the fault lines, is moving northwest in relation to the continental plate, which more or less stays put. This is a horizontal movement along the surface of the earth, not vertical, so southern California won't fall off into the ocean.

It will just keep grinding north and one day San Diego will be sitting across the Bay from Berkeley.

Of course, that's going to take a few million years.

That info is a little skewed. It says that this shake was centered 4 miles ENE of Alameda and 4 miles north of San Leandro but that's not possible with San Leandro south of Alameda. It would have to be about 7 miles north of San Leandro.

krs, I read the distances this way:

from Alameda 4 mi ENE to the quake;
from San Leandro 4 mi N to the quake;
from oakland 6 mi ESE to the quake;
from San Francisco
14 mi E to the quake.

So Alameda is actually WNW and San Leandro is S of the epicenter.

Does that make sense with regard to the geography? (I've been there, but have never lived there and am not that familiar with it)

It really doesn't. I saw the other specs but left them out because they only confuse things.

If Alameda is ENE to the center then it must be WSW of the center, not WNW. That would put Alameda in the water off of Berkeley. Alameda is an island, but it has no propulsion capable of that.

Isn't Alameda where they keep the "Nuclear Wessels"?

(If you get that, you'll also get "Gracie knows" and "Ah, a keyboard! How quaint" )

Having never been to California, I always thought I would like to see certain areas (San Francisco, for instance), before the state drops off into the ocean.

Should I book a flight now?

OK, seaplane it is. Who knows, I may even get a view of you atop your new island.

Would appreciate knowing which days you sunbathe in the nude.
