About a year ago I was talking with a friend who had/has a son in the military and was complaining about the military personnel being on food stamps.
I told her that has been going for over 20 years. She brushed it off didn't want to hear it. Well sometime later I found out that was the Republican party's attack against the Clinton/Gore administration.
In a speech Bush talked about the buildings falling apart and buildings that were built to last 10 years are celebrating their 60th anniversary.
Is this an attempt to degrade the previous administration while building his image up, looking forward to 2004?

Most of the time when extra money for the military is requested, it isn't for the rank and file person. It's earmarked for some weapon system. Well, weapons systems won't do much good if there's not enough people to operate them.
If there is to be money specifically earmarked for pay and bennies, hey, great. We(the average active duty military person and their family members) can use all the help we can get.

I try to view all political promises with a wait and see attitude. It's too easy to talk the talk and especially for politicians. But, this particular promise is too important. IMO, it's a major opportunity for President Bush to show he's willing to walk the walk and to make up for a long overdue injustice to our men and women in service. I'll definitely be clocking his moves on this promise.
My concern is whether the tax cut could take a bite out of some of these types of necessary budget increases. It seems that the published opinions of people who should "know" how it will play out varies widely... Some say it's no problem and some say the $$ won't be there.

I just re-read the Washington Post link that KRS linked.
Bush said:
"In a world of fast-changing threats, you give us stability," Bush said. "Because of you, America is secure. Because of you, the march of freedom continues. . . . Our nation can never fully repay our debt to you, but we can give you our full support. And my administration will."
He (or his speechwriter) said it much better than I could. I just hope he puts his money where his mouth is. I like Bush and I'd like to believe he will... but, I'm so cynical of politicians. blah!
