I loved Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich. I thought her energy just jumped through the screen. I think she's a beauty. Her character started without much, and set a goal for herself and reached it. She was determined.
I hope it wins at least for best picture and best actress, if not many more.

Thank you Linda_K I think I will watch the movie this three day weekend. I was planning to rent Gladiator and now I will watch Erin too.
Julia is a wonderful person and actor. I watched Runaway Bride and was delightfully surprise that I sincerely enjoyed it! I thought it was going to be a rip off of "Pretty Woman" but I was wrong!
Julia is my pick for winner!
I was watching "Satisfaction" the other day with Justine Bateman's sister -what's her name- & a few other "future" stars such as Julia and noticed that she had "star quality" in that picture. I was also reflecting on "Mystic Pizza" and had the conclusion in my opinion that Pizza also demonstrated her talents.
"Steel Magnolias" was excellent.
But let's not forget the REAL Erin....

You do know that the real Erin was in the movie, dontcha? In the scene at the steakhouse, when she takes the kids out to eat, the waitress was Erin!
Erin Brokovich has long been a hero and true role model of mine, since I first heard about her back in the 90's. I love Julia's potrayal of her, and I'll be cheering for them on Oscar night! Oh, and Albery Finney too!

I don't think I knew that Connie. Thank you for letting us know about it.
EDITED TO ADD: I suppose I would have noticed when I watched it this 3 DAY WEEKEND! Yippee! Then again I may have missed it if I got up for something, too.

Company came and wanted to watch..so I was doomed to keep them company. However, I must say I was pleased with Julia Roberts performance in accepting the Oscar, as well as what she wore. Very classy. Jennifer Lopez looked cheap. No imagination. Russel Crowe graced us peons with his presence at the beginning, but then looked shocked he won, which thawed him out a bit. All in all, most were dressed nicely and seemed "normal". I was pleasantly surprised.

may want to see gladiator in a theater.
I saw it opening night (20th odd person in line - hey men in skirts, how many of those movies do they make anymore?) and sat in the sweet spot: under the projectionist window.
It's definately a BIG screen epic. Detail will be lost on even the biggest bigscreen monster tv.
BTW, liked Steve Martin, classy and subtle, kind of nice for a change.
I won Best Pic, Actor and Actress in my Hollywood Stock Exchange warrents, so I was glad.

I would have loved for her to have said something to 'Sally Field' in her acceptance speech. Sally Field was her mother in 'Steel Magnolias' and has been ridiculed for years for her acceptance speech for her 2nd Best Actress Oscar.

wonder why presenters want to re-edit their speeches from the previous years?
Last year it was Gwyneth Paltrow, who took the time to self-flagelate over her "Shakespeare in Love" speech (which was fine, what's wrong with being emotional?).
Then this year Hilary Swank wanted to add some words.
I loved both women's performances and speeches, but that is not the time or place to do such a thing. Why not just smile, do your job and act like a star?
yes JLo had the worst dress out there.
Though what was going through Juliette Binoche's mind? Flapper? Victorian Doyenne? Sargent portrait? PoMo Retro Chick? Halloween? Cher?
There were a lot of great gowns.

Um--the presenters say what the script tells them to say. Don't bleme *them*--blame the people writing the show.

Yes I remember seeing Ben Hur, The Greatest Show on Earth, Giant and other great movies on the big movie screen that when transfered to the tv it is ruined no matter how big the tv screen is.

In my opinion the presenter can refuse to say the script and they can request to add something to the script if they want to. If something is unethical I believe the presenter have a duty to refuse to say the script as written.
There has been many times that presenters would go off script but they would not be invited back. Kim Basinger a few years back mentioned Spike Lee and was "black listed" from the academy awards until she won the Oscar®. Has anyone seen her since she won, on the awards show?

Did Julia say anything about Erin? I didn't hear her say anything to honor Erin let alone the people at Hinkley, California.
Next year when she presents the Best Actor Award she probably will say something on behalf of Erin and the people
It could be that there are people who don't like Erin. Michael Medved said on his radio program the other day that Erin is responsible for the energy crisis in California because of the huge settlement and that Erin's former husband is sueing her. Michael was running her down.
