This is not critical by any means, but I thought I would toss it out and see if the Collective Wisdom of AW members can shed any light.

I opened an existing document in WordPerfect, intending to use it as a template and "Save As" a different file name after I revised it. And of course, I neglected to change the name before I saved it. When I did the "Ctrl-S" to Save, as I do frequently, it overwrote the older version of the document.

The help files don't address this problem, and I've been to the Corel web site looking for answers. Can't find it there either. WordPerfect keeps a temporary document called "Backup" in memory in case the power dies before you save, or whatever, but the backup document is erased when you do save. So it no longer exists.

Now I can certainly live without the old document. It was notes concerning a project I am working on: What had been done to date and what needed to be done for completion. But if there is a way to retrieve the old version, it would be nice. And one day, I am probably going to overwrite something critical and it would be very lovely to know how to get the overwritten document back before I am in a panic.

Any tricks that I am missing?

TIA -

There may be a way to get that file back...but I sure don't know what it is

For future problems, you may want to install the world's greatest program...GoBack. If you had it you could easily get your file. jamesoblivion suggested it some time ago...I bought it, and it's saved my cookies many times since.

Adaptec (now Roxio) makes it. You can read about it here:

It's truly wonderful, if you're prone to mess-ups, as I am. I hope some techie comes along to help you with your present trouble...

What version of WordPerfect are you using? And is it for DOS or Windows?

Version 9 (WP 2000) for Windows. I am running Win98.

I thought I put had that in the first post, but I must have deleted it, thinking it wasn't necessary. Sorry...

Toke, I will check out the GoBack program. I remember James talking about it, but assumed it was for installing and uninstalling new software.

Did you have the Timed Backup feature turned on? Perhaps there is an older file saved where ever the default backup folder is?

Look in Tools, Settings, Files...I think.

Hi, Meya -

The way the program is originally set up, the Timed Backup file disappears when you save the onscreen file, so the old one is gone.

However, in dinking around with the settings, I did discover one that says "Save old version as backup file when new file is saved." This would allow reversion to a previously-saved version, something that two of my graphics programs already permit. A nice feature, and I would not have found it without your suggestion.

Thank you!
