OK, I am an admitted technopeasant. I need help in blocking email. I use Outlook Express.
I keep getting Korean or Japanese ad spam for different products & all of them come from hotmail.com. Now, I tried just blocking *all* email from Hotmail, but wouldn't you know it, almost immediately I got several auction winners would had hotmail addys.
Then I, in a flash of brilliance, noticed that every single one of these spam emails aren't addressed to me directly (some aren't even to earthlink addys!). So I decided to block emails that aren't addressed to me specifically. Now, I have tried & tried to understand the instructions that Help gives me but I can't seem to "get" it. Can anyone here tell me how to do this? In words of one syllable & covering every little detail?

Hi Bunnicula...Yes, you can set OE to block mass emails that don't list your specific email address in the To: field.
Do this:While in OE, click Tools/Messages Rules/Mail. Click New...Then check the box in front of "Where the To line contains".
After you click that, the bottom portion of that window will have text in it, the "contains people" will be a clickable link. Click it, and type the address you are creating the rule for, in your case, your email address. Then click Add, then OK.
Now, click the link that says "contains ****@youremail.com", highlight your address, and then click the Options button in the window that pops up.
In that window is a choice for "Message Does Not Contain The People Below". Check that option, and you'll be back in the original window. Make sure you are selecting the actual Rule you want OE to apply, either Delete it, or Do not download from the server.
Click OK out of there and it should be all set. If you do receive bulk mail from anyone that you WANT to receive, you'll need to set up a seperate rule for them. Example, I get mail from a friend in another state. She uses a mailing list, but she suppresses the list so we don't see all the email addresses. I had to set up a rule just for her so I get her emails.
I hope I explained that clearly...I'm not always good at typing directions. Post back if you need help, or email me at [email protected].
The OE rules can be tricky, in addition to my rules I use a shareware program called Pop3Scan Mailbox. This lets me see the email on my server that I am not accepting into my OE. It also lets me dump the mail that is collecting on our email server, because we have settings to allow it to stay there even after we receive it, because I retrieve my email on two different computers.

The way to accomplish this in OE is so a** backwards, it's a wonder anyone can figure it out. I sort of stumbled across it myself one day when I hit my limit of porn spam.
