Borillar - Looks to me, by the graphic for those mutual funds krs posted, the $$ had gone down approx. 40 % before President Bush entered office. (Peaked at $70 in Sept. then were approx 40% lower in Jan.01)

Over a year ago, financial advisors were arguing whether tech stocks were going to keep growning or hit a down slide. Many felt they were way overpriced and were recommending people sell their technology stocks. The stock market is a gamble..... What happened is obvious.

I suppose one might make the point that in
September, although Bush had not yet been elected, it was widely believed that he might be elected, and that led to the indicated results.

You could probably also offer other arguments...

Here's an OP-ED piece I agree with about Finding A Scapegoat

Blame Clinton
Blame President Bush
Blame Greenspan
Blame Reality

Hello MrPotatoHeadd - I respectfully disagree with your reasoning "in
September, although Bush had not yet been elected, it was widely believed that he might be elected, and that led to the indicated results".

I don't believe for a minute that any Democrat thought Bush was going to win, thereby causing the stock markets decline. I'd think the Democrats felt they had a 'shoe in' as he was, after all the Vice President.

Many will agrue that Bush didn't win. That's okay with me. He's there. But for a race to have been this close, for an incumbent VP to have won/lost by that margin shows something. He should have won by a land slide and then we wouldn't have had the mess we did about the votes.

Edited to spell your name correctly - sorry.

I don't like Bush. I will never like Bush. I didn't vote for Bush. At least I don't think I did, I live in Florida, so I might have. But I wouldn't have if I could have figured out the stupid ballot.

He should have won by a land slide...

All the newspaper stories I read leading up to the election kept saying "too close to call". Maybe I was reading the wrong paper?

It's not a laughing matter to vote and
not be sure that your vote was counted.

MrPotatoHeadd - You are right, as the election grew closer, the news agencies were finding it harder to project a sure winner.

But what I'm referring to is that the incumbent usually has more of an advantage just from being the incumbent. Easier for them to be re-elected as the people know where they stand (by previous actions/votes), what they're for and against, if they've like what the incumbent has accomplished. That's what I was referring to.

Gore didn't even take is own home state in the election.

The market started sliding when polls started showing a possibility that Bush MIGHT win. Wall street listens to the wind blowing. The peak in Sept. followed Bush making such a fool of himself in debate that it didn't seem possible that he could win. Investors sink or swim on their ability to predict the future. They'll call Oct. and early Nov the great sellout, but the smart ones were already gone.

toke - Well anyway, it's all your fault that I went to the Libertarian website (while we were all debating about the elections) and did quite a bit of reading. Think I'm converting. I did like most of their views on the issues. Had mixed feelings about voting for Nader, but just couldn't bring myself to vote for Gore or Bush.

Have to disagree with

Beginning of cold war with Russia? (50 "spies" expelled)

I believe they had known about them for a long time, and with the current resurgence of information gathering; 'the double agent' they caught, those Russian diplomats had to be told to leave the country. Any President in office at this time would have sent them back anyway, because of what happened.

krs there were 3 debates, and Bush didn't do well on the first one, but by all reports he 'won' the last 2 debates.

Helen I'll respectfully disagree with your disagreement

Those Russian diplomats were in contact with the agent, that is now in jail for being an agent for Russia too.
