There are many things that used to be called by another name, and are now called somethng else. Here are a few examples. Can you think of more. If you live in a country other than the US, you may even have more.

Icebox - refridgeator

light bill - electric bill

Yeager, my memory is that it went from
Ice Box to Fridgedair (a brand name) which was actually a refrigerator shortened to Frige.
The Ice Man wore a large piece of heavy leather over his shoulder to keep the ice from coming in contact with his
skin, and he would always chip off some small pieces for us kids to take off the back of the truck as a treat. He also was the coal man in the winter...which was the fuel our furnace burned to heat (such as it was) a 6 room house.
Our cook stove was wood fired until dad had
it converted to kerosene and at the tender age of 6, I was able to change the kerosene container to keep the fire going and shake down the "clinkers" in the furnace and bank the fire for the night. (Dad worked nights as well as tending the farm in the day and Mom relied on me to help a lot).
We also had a milkman who delivered dairy products and there was the bread man who had yummy pastries as well (we hardly ever bought those as they were too dear. We had our own cow and chickens for many years so the need for the milkman was occasional.
Ahhh the so called good old days...as a kid I thought it was great, my folks surely put in long hours.

zilvy, I remember when the milkman's vehicle was pulled by a horse! My grandparents lived on an "acrage" and came to town once a week to sell eggs. I remember having to scurry through the chicken yard to get to the outhouse since they didn't have indoor plumbing. They had a storm/root cellar for storing food supplies and taking shelter in bad weather (Oklahoma). I also remember party lines...we've come along way with cell phones. Remember when you didn't make a long distance call unless someone in the family had died? It was so expensive. Gosh, I'm feeling really OLD now!!!

Ooooh Margot, I remember party lines and the funny little clicks when neighbors would pick up just to see who was talking to you.And of course you are right...no long distance calls unless it was a true emergency.
We used to call it:
Victrola....Hi Fi....then Stereo....CD
Stove lifter..used to lift the lids on oil or wood burning stoves. (not the whole stove)

Hi Zilvy and Margot

Here is my memory of the Milkman. He came sometimes everyday in the 60's. His delivery vechile had an engine in it, not horses. He would put milk and other dairy product in the milk box that was built into some houses, or you could have him put milk in a steel milkbox near your door. You could tell him what you wanted for the next day or leave a note. Here's a picture of the typical milktruck for those who have never seen one. It's a Divco Milktruck, made in Detroit. This is a model from 1941.

I remember when a push bike was just a bicycle. Now it is a mountain bike, or a special super duper 2 million speed BMX . You never hear them just called a plain old push bike anymore.

What about the movies, they used to be referred to as going to see a flick, now we go to the movie cinema.

I can remember when the baker used to deliver bread and cream buns to my grandma's, he used to let us kids' pick the best cream bun. That was usually the one with the most cream in it, or at least the one we thought had the most cream. LOL

In the financial world it was a panic then they became known as depressions until the big one ruined that name so then they were just resessions. Now that name is scarry so they are just turn downs or dips.
Doesn't matter what you call 'em - I still got laid off/pink slipped / given the boot Fri.

gravid, did you really get laid off Friday? If so, that's very upsetting to hear...and no doubt worse for you since you have to deal with it. Do you have some options for another job? Gosh...

Ok here goes.
Remember when,
Pot was a vessel for cooking?
Remember when,
Crack was a line in the sidewalk?
Remember when,
Grass was something that made your lawn look pretty?
Remember when,
Coke was a beverage?
Remember when,
you said you were gay and nobody thought twice?

yeager,

In the small town where we lived at the time, the milkman would come into the house and put the milk in the refrigerator as late as the mid 70's. Hard to believe now.

gravid,

Sorry to hear about your job.

Pat

My mother still always calls movies a "picture", i.e. That was a good picture. Or, that was a true picture.

Hi muriel,

Didn't you used to call the radio the "wireless" when you used to listen to CK?

Hi pattaylor,

WOW! That is hard to beleive. If the milkman existed today amd did this, he would be shot or arrested. How times change.
