Due to recent advances in chip technology, utilizing copper wire in micron dimensions for internal connections. One might consider that soon or latter in the quest to make it go faster and use less power. That gold would logically be the next canidate to further optimize the technology, due to its superior conductivity.

Gold will always have importance as an engineering material but it's price is set as a hedge against the fluctuations of modern currencies that are not based on any physical thing of value.
When space based mining becomes common later in this century using the vacuum distillation of astroids first platinum and then gold will be priced
about the same as copper. So don't think you are going to bury it somewhere to transfer wealth to your children. If you want to buy something to retain value for a long haul buy
something that will never be common again like some fine black walnut lumber, or resort real estate well away from the ocean.
