My daughter just had to have a smaller car, to get to and from college and work.

She has a big a** truck, and its a gas hog

So she went ahead herself and bid on a small Honda Accord last night and won.....

I have to go with her now and get it, because its a stick shift, and she isn't really good with one (yet!)

Has anyone bought a car from ebay. Dang, what if its really bad, the pic and description didn't sound bad, but I dunno.

We could get up there and find it to be a real piece of junk, and she could not take it, but would she be in any big trouble with ebay?

She's 20, her money, but I wish she could have just went and looked around, test drove some, and done it that way.

I'm leary

why would you possibly buy a car on ebay when there are live auctions all over the country if you really want to live dangerously? even there you have to know what you are doing.

personally I would not, but she did, and is of age.

Yeah her uncle offered to take her to the car auctions here or go look for used here in town, but she went ahead and did this one......

We're going up there now, its her money, and her whatever on ebay..... eek.

No offense, but who in their right mind would buy a used car without at least test driving it first?

Spazmodeus

She would

Her choice & her money, even though I DID forewarn her

edited: I did nag nag nag her about test driving a car. She gets something in her head, she's gotta do it... one day she'll learn, and it'll probably be the expensive way. I just feel for ME, having to drive it back! I should have told her I don't want any part in it, but I caved, and told her I'd help.

Got my lesson with a $1500 Subaru bought after I got out of college. Brakes failed one day later -- and that's a car I test drove. Best bet is to drive the car to a garage and have a mechanic look it over. If the seller isn't amenable to that, he's hiding something.

But buying at auction ... no thanks.

They gotta learn their own lessons in this life, no matter how much we tell them. Kids-love em!

Okay, the worst that could happen is she gets a negative feedback for not completing the sale. You test drive, look in the engine, do everything you know how to do before she hands over the money. If you have a trusted mechanic that could go with you that's even better. If the guy is legit and there's nothing wrong with the car, he won't mind the inspection.

If he minds, just walk away.

I recently bought a truck off E-Bay motors and am very happy with the whole shabang. Had great contact with the seller (who was in FL and I am in KY). Received the truck about 3 weeks ago and love it!! Exactly as described, runs great. And got a killer deal on it as well. So there are positive deals out there, you just have to find them. Hope your daughters buy turns out as great as mine has!!

There are so many used cars listed in the paper I can't see why anyone would purchase off of eBay except in special circumstances. Maybe a Bugatti Royal, or a Shelby Mustang would be good to purchase off of eBay, but a Honda Accord... I don't see it.

It's probably fresh from some chopshop in Missouri where they take two wrecks and weld the front of one to the back of the other then move it state to state to clear the salvage title.

Should be better than new!!

Ahhh man, they told me that the silver ring around the truck was the latest craze in FL and I was hoping to start the same thing here.

Oh well, as long as it is "better than new".

Better than good!

I can't believe it!

My brother with us. The guy said he wouldn't sell it before it was looked over and test driven!

So my brother drove it, and it was fine, just fine! AND he sold it to her $100 less than the bid. The tire in front had been filled with that 'fix it spray' stuff.

Has some rust, interior is great.

She even bought one of their big TV's for $40.

She took a chance, but it turned out good

(and besides, they said it was cool, if we test drove it, and we didn't want it )

NearTheSea, I am so glad things turned out well for her! I know my friends thought I was crazy buying over the internet, (you should have seen our loan officer's face) but we did our research and now they are jealous over the deal we got. Some have even given me details on the kind of car they would like so I can keep an eye out for a car for them.
Again, I am really glad there is a happy ending!!

I think I'd wait a week or two on the feedback, what's the rush?

I thought it a good deal. They were concerned it was 'just going to be 2 women come out there' and no guy who knows cars.

In fact, he said he wasn't going to sell it to her, until she had a mechanic check it out. They weren't real hard up to sell it.
My brother checked it out, not thoroughly, albeit, but he does know cars, so its a good commuter car for her, and for the price, I think they deserve good feedback.

NearTheSea,

In Maryland, all used cars have to pass inspection. This usually turns up major work
that must be completed in order to register
the car.

Is that the case in Washington?

Hi Helen
Yes. Here in Wa, we have to go thru emmisions every other year.

However this car has been thru it for this year.. another plus

Actually, In Maryland, emmissions is just
a minor test.

We have to have the entire car checked...
tires, brakes...everything.

You are really lucky!

Wow! No we don't have that here, just emissions, and thats every other year, I guess we really are lucky in that way!

What a hassle! And you have to do this every year? yikes

If a car fails emissions ($12 for test) I think! because I never have had one fail, but I think, (maybe someone from WA knows more) you need to go to a state mechanic and max. $100-$150.
