We have some new neighbors in our condos that are going to make the summer a trial. They yell and slam the doors and the 14 year old girl was out on the lawn last night throwing a tantrum beating the ground with her fists like a 2 year old.
Three times now I have had to close our windows because they are smoking SOMETHING that smells like trash burning. I know what tobbacco and pot smell like but this smells like the fire when I helped my buddy clean out his barn that had not been used for years and there were old moldy papers and dusty old lumber. NO solvent or chemical smell. Anyone know what in the world it could be??? I have NO idea at all what crack smells like. Is there anything else that kids are smoking now? - Yeah I know anything that burns right? Seriously.

Maybe they have a wood-burning stove gravid.

They could not have a stove or fireplace but the cigerettes with cloves or other stuff is a maybe. I forgot about those being a gezzer.
Biddies aren't they called?
Does not smell like a clove on a ham but I don't know what they smell like burning. Thanks for the idea. Wish they'd stick with Cannabis. I don't mind the smell of marijuana much. They keep this up I may cook a mess of chitlins....See how tough they are.

Here's another one, my kids told me about
(they think its weird and stupid) but people will dip their cigarettes into embalming fluid and smoke it, for a high, and they told me it smells like something dead or been sitting a loooooooong time...

Dang that is sick, but people do it, and get really messed up on it.

Could it be a smoker? Like something you'd use to smoke fish or beef, etc?

That is truely gross. My brother in law is a big boozer and in the Phillipines he used to drink a lot of San Miguel. The doc said they put so much formaldehyde in it to preserve it for the tropical climate that it will preserve your liver for you before you want it preserved. I can't think smoking it would be much better.
Made me remember a shop where I worked and the man running the radial drill always had sulfer based cutting oil dripping off his hands. He was a chain smoker and by the third
time he picked it up the cig. would be translucent with oil. The burning sulfer smell was horrid all day long near him. All he could talk about was retiring and going fishing and it made me sad 'cause I knew he didn't stand a chance. He was 50 and looked about 80. Had a face like the last apple on the bottom of the bin that dried up instead of rotting.

Could they be burning their household trash in a barrel? My neighbor down the road does that and boy does it stink! It's also illegal. We burn papers, etc but not food!

These are apartments that were converted to condos. No place to burn anything. In fact you have a seperate area by the pool - but outside the fence to barbeque. There are no patios or balconies at the units to do it.
Not the greatest place but the cheapest around here. Most new stuff going up here is a quarter million for condos and a half million for a house.

The public display of behavior is consistant with chemical dependancy -- I've seen what it does to people. That any normal person owuld never do such a thing in public, let alone at home, is indicative of the permanent brain damage that occurs with prolonged cocain use and especially meth amphetamine (crank) use. The smell of that stuff cooking is nauseating and is not really a "chemical" smell, but just a very unique smell that cannot be easily described. Usually, these sorts of renters never get into a place unless the property managers are doing the same thing. At least, that's how it is here in Portland, Oregon.

Thanks Borillar - That's what I was intimating with recounting their behavior but you expressed it directly very well.
The owner is the grandfather who is a businessman and the people living there now are his son and granddaughter. The father is almost never here and the granddaughter is a mess.
I am sure that there is not physical space to actually do a drug lab and I don't think either of them are bright enough to make oatmeal following the directions on the package. But I sure believe they are using something and I just am not familiar enough with it to know what.
We have had people before who did coke and they were so addicted they would be running late to work and trying to snort a line on their briefcase running down the stairs, but they were quiet - polite - and very upscale with expensive cars and flew to New York every couple months to shop for clothing etc.
These people would never be here if the rent was not given to them.

gravid: doesn't your condo have an association for setting rules and "community guide lines?" I'd think others would be as bothered by the smells as you are...hopefully the whole place isn't occupied by druggies! Otherwise, I hope you have AC....keep the doors and windows closed and keep the air conditioner running til it's furnace season!

The best revenge for stinky neighbors that I have found is stuffed cabbage. That stuff smells worse than the foulest of body odors!
Clove cigarettes? I don't think you'd mind it if pot doesn't. It's like a pipe tobacco or incense.
methinks you've got some addicts as neighbors. Hope you don't have too many kids around there.

One thing that comes to mind is that if they are cooking up their own crank (meth) there is the possibility of an explosion occurring. I would imagine that it could be done in a small space and there are some scary chemicals used to make meth. I have heard of meth lab explosions many times before and I sure hope that is not what is happening with your neighbors!

clove cigarettes has a sweet smell to it.
Some incense have a horrible smell.
All this aside, I also think it could be of more a drug thing. Don't know what crack smells like. I smoke opium once a long time ago, I don't remember if it had a distinct odor or not. Here's a question, does Heroin smell when they burn it to make it into a liquid form?

Maybe I would keep some close attention to them. Is there alot of people going in and out? etc........

Tut, tut, tut. Such leaps to the worst conclusions! Gravid said the odor was most like that of "old moldy papers and dusty old lumber" burning. I think it's quite clear this is an eBay family, trying to dry out funky waterlogged books in the oven so they can sell them to unsuspecting bibliophiles. The 14-year-old daughter throwing a tantrum on the lawn is the clincher--she's undoubtedly the designated packer, who's tired of inhaling mold spores and can't take it any more.

Actually this is the first time someone of this low a nature has moved in here.
I just want to know what sort of substance they are abusing so I can deal with it.
I can go through the original locks in these places without leaving a mark in about 15 to 20 seconds so if I need to I can go look and see what they are using without any trouble but I thought someone might recognize what makes that sort of smell and make it real easy and risk free.
Police have the right to enter without a warrant from smell alone but I want to be able to ID the substance accuratly to the smell before asking them to go in. Once they go in these people do not have the money to post the kind of bond that will be set so I will be free of them. It will not be the first set of people I turned in for making pests of themselves.
And before you ask - no they are not worth being afraid of at all.

gravid,

Forgot to ask, would these smells happen to coincide with the dinner hour by any chance? (a scary thought I know) However, maybe they're vegan or something.

Do these condo's have fireplaces? Maybe they're actually burning moldy papers and dusty old lumber.

You know us so well!
I started to panic when cyanide suggested knocking on the door!
I hate being so predictable!
Thanks for the levity, pareau! You're probably pretty close to the truth!
Maybe the 14 year old just got her first neg?

I just got through speaking with a lady who works with addicted people for the state of MI and she said the smell of crack is more like weeds or leaves burning than paper and
it remindes her of how your car smells when it overheats. Right on the money. She described it better than I could. She also said that for a day after smoking it a person smells like it real quick if they get sweaty.
She said many a time she has told clients not to lie to her 'cause she can smell it on 'em.
Well now I am 90% sure what it is so now it is a matter of timing. Sometimes they smoke pot also so that would be better as I am 100% sure on that.
pareau - I have dried out a paperback in the microwave when I went to sleep and dropped it in the tub. They will never lay flat again but at least you can finish reading it. I can see sellers being driven to strange behavior.

Uh .... the next time you smell it, call 911 and report the fire I'm sure that will get to the bottom of it quick!

Oh, and for your friends who like coke ... betcha I know what they were shopping for in New York!
