There is a link at the bottom to yesterday's story where the cabbie said that the cello owner "broke his heart."

It just made me sick. Maybe $75. was cheap, but this cabbie calling and complaining to the newspapers is so low.

If I were the cab company I would reward him with his last check. He obviously has no thought of honesty having any value on principle alone, and what can the next customer
expect but that he will learn to improve his bargining position by retaining the lost goods.

Actually, it is traditional to give a 10% finder's fee, not 1%. Of course, that does not really pertain to the cabbie, because the violin was accidently left in his care. A $75 "guardian fee" is a good tip. After all, it's not like it was found in a trash bin by a homeless person, it was left where the owner would eventually inquire for its return (if not the police). But, I hear the New York is just "that kind of town!"

the cabbie is a jerk!

A reward is not "OWED", it is freely given.

I had a waitress run clear to the front door of a restaurant as we were leaving, braying "you left me a dollar!" I looked at it in her hand and said "oh, my goodness! you're right!" and took it and put it in my pocket as I turned and left. The dollar was a token for the nonservice we'd received as she visited and giggled with a party of her friends that came in and I even got up and poured us coffee after nearly finishing our meal on ONE CUP!

Mom, breakfast starts your day out right! (usually)

Disgusting behavior on the part of the cabby.

The owner should never give in to him. He should be happy with the $75.

I don't know about this one. If the owner said there was a 1% value reward I think the cabbie should receive that amount. Afterall, he could have kept it and sold it on Ebay for millions!

The 1% fee was suggested by the cabbie - not offered by the owner.
I think I will call up and demand a 1% fee for not breaking in and stealing it.
After all it does not belong to either of us. He just had a little better access to it and I can correct that!!

NY is that kind of town...once, actually twice (the first and last time) we did an Antique Photo Show in NY.

My husband did all the physical loading and unloading of our goods onto a dolly held in place by a porter. We all walked 20 feet to the elevator. After off loading everything without any assistance from the porter I gave him $8. (this was in the 70's) He screamed at me...THAT IS NOT ENOUGH! Well, we knew there wouldn't be a rolling cart came time to exit if we didn't pay up so another $7. was added. By the way his time
spent holding the cart was a total of 15 min.
$1.00 a minute was pretty good for back then.

Actually, it was the *cabbie* who figured that a "1% value reward" should be given, not the cello's owner. This is a plain case of greed.

gravid and bunnicula:

Thanks for the correction. I have to admit, though, that if I were in the cabbie's shoes I would be somewhat disappointed with only $75. I would NEVER make a fuss about it, but I can see the cabbie's disappointment. But hey, it's $75...he could have gotten nothing!

I'd also like to point out that not all classical musicians are wealthy. Sometimes their very expensive instruments are purchased for them by patrons or arts organizations.

Very valid point, Nebula. Pretty good when we have to give a financial statement to go along with our reward/tip. That $75. could very well represent a substantial sacrafice on the part of the musician. Have to ask myself, though, where was this person's head when he got out of the cab. How do you forget your musical instrument??

Well, Yo-Yo Ma (who probably does have some $) did pretty much the same thing: http://www.nydailynews.com/1999-10-17/News_and_Views/City_Beat/a-44080.asp

Doesn't say anything about a reward.
