Here's an article I came across in a local news sheet that gave me a grin.

The folks in Longmont, Colorado, have gone the extra mile to be politically correct. They've replaced all of the "Dead End" street signs in the city with "No Outlet" signs. City council voted 4 to 2 for the changes. Councilor Fred Wilson thought the move was unnecessary. "We're just becoming too sensitive," he argued. But resident Lee Almquist, who lives on a street that had a "Dead End" sign, told council they'd done the right thing. "When we'd come home, we'd have to drive by it and it wasn't pleasant," said Almquist, "I feel better now."

We do have some seriously overly sensitive people, I believe that they're problem is they have no outlet. Should voice my concerns that my wife leans against me when I'm driving and might possibly cause an accident someday because of a "Soft Shoulder" sign on the side of the highway?

Couldn't they use batteries?

No batteries were possible, I believe it only operated on an AC current.

If they did this in California, it would almost be laughable

Here in Colorado Springs (not too far from Longmont) all we have is "NO OUTLET" rather than "DEAD END" signs.

Here in Jacksonville, Florida and surrounding towns. We have a combination of both.

What I don't understand, is how on earth did our grandparents and great grandparents cope with all of these politally incorrect atrocities?

It really makes no difference if they labeled a street as "No Outlet" or "Dead End" to me. I do think it is a waste of tax payer's money to convert existing signs because someone driving past a "Dead End" sign finds it 'unpleasant.'

The council might have been able to purchase a few therapy booklets, saved money and at least alerted some people that they needed to give more attention to their mental health.

If it was soooo unpleasant why did they buy a house on a dead end street? How was there first the people who find it "unpleasant" or the "Dead End" sign?

What a waste of money!

Being from Denver, I thought Longmont was a dead end!

I agree with them, of course I would.
I think password work as subliminal messages, remember? I am right, and so are they.

There is a cemetery on one of the old routes in NH, we pass it on our way to my Aunts place. You first see the fence and then a drive way with a very large sign that says
"EXIT ONLY" the irony is from the road we are on you cannot see another driveway or gateway.
Now that is what I call a dead end!

We have "Street Ends" signs .. not sure when they were replaced, but do remember they used to say "Dead End" .. If your lights hit the sign just right, you can still read "Dead" underneath "Street".

My thoughts on this issue have gone 'Un-Surveyed' and may not be of importance to the P.T.B.

"Slow Children" always gets to me. Seems rude to advertise mentally impaired children.

Don't yell, it was meant tongue-in-cheek.

sadie....do the signs really say "Slow Children" ?? Ours say "SLOW...CHILDREN AT PLAY"...big difference in the meaning, but it still wouldn't bother me I guess, unless I had a "slow" child.....("slow" doesn't always mean mental)

Edited to say no yelling....I know what you meant. [ edited by nanastuff on May 29, 2001 10:03 AM ]

OK, just to push this political hyperbole a little further...what about "Blind Driveway"
shouldn't that be Visually Impaired Driveway???

Oh, and why do they have Braille on drive up ATM windows?

We call dead end streets "cul de sacs" where I live. Houses on "cul de sacs" usually sell for more because there is less traffic and a greater sense of neighborhood (we used to have a yearly street party and barbeque on our street).

What is the literal translation of cul de sac, Irene? I live on one but it is not considered "dead end" due to the fact that there is a road that can be taken prior to reaching the end of our road.

Zilvy: The word "cul-de-sac" actually shows up as an English word in my Webster's dictionary. It is defined as "blind alley". The literal translation from the French is "bottom of bag".
