"With the advent of the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention, the emphasis has crept in the direction of wanting to use the levers of state power to further a moral agenda"

http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/06/11/baptistconvention.ap/index.html

Several months ago here in the RT, I made mention that the Fundies had taken over control of the Southern Baptist and what they were up to. All I got on here was a denial by some Southern Baptists in the RT and was asked to provide a useful link. Here you go!

Well, you do,jlpiece, since "The conservative shift has included the SBC's declaration that wives should "submit graciously" to their husbands". and we should, jlpiece, if this change in your life reduces the amount of transferal henpecking that you do here.

I'm sorry, are you addressing the poster and not the topic? That is against the CG's you know. In fact with all of your nudges and warnings, I'd be careful. You would truly be missed.

krs,

Your comment, "amount of transferal henpecking that you do here." is awfully close to the line. Back up a bit, please.

jlpiece,

Please allow the moderators to do our jobs. While we appreciate your wish to help, it's really not necessary. Thanks for your cooperation.

"The conservative shift has included the SBC's declaration that wives should "submit graciously" to their husbands".

With that thought in mind, I would say that it's time for all good Christian girls to leave the Baptist church.

Next, they will be burning books.

How did we get from wives submitting graciously to burning books? Just curious.

It's a trend, practiced only by the Southern
Baptists.

Actually, jlpiece

I should have added a little smiley face in
my comment about the good Christian girls...
just for you.

That was a humorous comment.

Then, I added my serious comment about book banning. Of course, there is no logical connection between the two remarks.

To add, was it burning, or banning?

Please remember, this forum is not designed to discuss individuals. I believe the topic is something about Southern Baptists...if everyone will please move back to the subject at hand, I will look forward to reading the thread as it progresses.

OK, now that you've had a chance to read this thread, let me continue with what I was saying about four or five months ago.

Two years ago, when the Fundamentalists now controlling the SBC made two rules that shocked the nation, a) that women could no longer become pastors; and b) that women had to "submit" to thetr husbands, that was only an insidious dodge. The real change came at the core beliefs of the Southern Baptists and was generally not known.

First, up until this change in policy, a certain important rule was in place: if the Teachings of Jesus said to do it one way, and then you found elsewhere in the Bible where it said to do that thing another way -- which were you to go with? The dogma had always been: Go with Jesus and you won't go wrong!

Now, that rule got reversed. So if there is a conflict between what Jesus taught and what it says eleswhere in the Bible, the formal rules now state that Jesus does not take prescidence -- you must go with ANYTHING ELSE in the Bible before Jesus!

Now, how can you call yourself a Christian if you don't follow Christ? Is this not a Satanic stance? Wouldn't only Satan benefit from this?

Of lesser importance of what got changed was that the Bible has been pronounced "Complete". In Fundy-speak, that means that the Bible has no errors, no contradictions whatsoever; because if it looks like it has one, it's YOUR poor understanding of the Perfect Bible sanctified by God. In other words, never question what it says, no matter how wrong it may appear to be.

The reason for a "complete" Bible is that it makes it easier to swallow whole, even if it doesn't sit right in your stomach. Therefore, it is easier to brainwash someone rather than to educate them. Yumm!

"Next, they will be burning books."
"It's a trend, practiced only by the Southern Baptists."

Although you were being humorous, Helen, sadly, it is true that Organized Religions, not just Christian ones I'm sorry to say, have their share of book burnings. And it's not just religion -- fascist Nazi Germany burned a lot of "un-German" books too!

As you know, Borillar, another thread would be needed to discuss banned books which incidentally includes some of the world's greatest literature. Since this thread is about the influence of the fundamentalists in the Southern Baptist organization, I would just like to point out that my remark was not really a joke. This group of fundamentalists is making an effort to remove books from public and school libraries right now.

Their attempt at censorship is focused on their perception of immorality including profane language, sex, textbooks that teach evolution or any other kind of religion, anything relating to abortion or euthanasia or suicide...the list is endless. Not only literature is being censored but music and dancing.

I'm afraid that we are returning to an era of book burning and I am serious about this. John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath was burned in 1939 in California soon after it was first published, essentially concurrent with the book burnings instigated by the Nazis in Germany.

Please excuse me if I have strayed off topic but I just want everyone here to know that my remarks about book censorship were serious.

Someone mentioned before in a joking way, that they were shredding books in Mississippi for compost. Well, my answer to their response is that
no "fertilizer" is needed
in Mississippi...Just "fertilizer"
detectors.

Isn't it the case that there are 'directives' in the old testament that women will not be pastors, or even elders of churches? That they cannot witness to men except in the presence of a male elder and then only with their heads covered? Didn't we have a person here at one time who described her practice of book burning and gave biblical justification of it? Aren't those all elements proscribed by fundamentalist sects? But isn't there scripture in which Jesus says, in effect, to ignore the old teachings, or book, specifically the old testament, and follow his word from thenceforth? Wouldn't it then follow that a Christian could not adopt (impose) the elements dictated in the old testament by fundamentalist orders?

Just curious.
