Does anyone else have summer cold or is it just me? I know that summer does not technically start until June 21(MY b-day), but when it is this hot and miserable I call it summer. So now I will probably spend my birthday stuffy, aching and hateful. The fact that I have asthma and bronchitis on top of a cold makes it even better. Does anyone know of any remedies to cure cold symptoms. Right now I have a headache so bad I feel like cutting off my head.

I can't give you any remedies but I can sympathize. I just spent the weekend stuck in bed with a nasty head cold that doesn't have any intention of getting any better in the near future. I feel awful. Problem is, all the winter remedies are just to hot to think about in June when it's 80 and rising. The last thing I want to do is drink hot tea!!!

On my third day and miserable. Using Allegra with decongestant and have the air cranked up. I go in and take a luke warm shower often. Drinking lots of fluids amd a little bourbon - not a lot. I have to ship tomarrow and it will not be fun.

Tequila - it won't actually make you better, you just won't know you're sick.

Zicam for Colds. There are two Zicams. One is for allergies, one is for colds. If you use it, use it every 2-3 hours and give it a chance to work.

Oh - and Mountain Dew for the headache. No kidding. Trust me on this.

Hope you feel better.

Horseradish for the stuffy head. Load a ham sandwich with horseradish and take a big bite. Instant relief.

If you have to clear your stuffy nose and nothing else works, Afrin (or a drugstore generic with the same active ingredient) is THE best stuff. You can only use it for 2 or 3 days, though. Drink at least 1/2 gallon of water per day, and eat plenty of chicken soup (seriously--they've proven it helps!). Avoid anything with caffeine (it dries out your membranes), or drink an extra glass of water each time you drink something like that. Keep alchohol to a minimum since it also dries you out. Zinc lozenges are soothing for your throat and may help (but have a little something to eat first).

Decongestants like Sudafed (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) tend to dry you out, so it's especially important to keep hydrated. Antihistamines like Benadryl have diphenhydramine hydrochloride as the active ingredient, but that's actually what many brands of sleeping pills have (which is why they warn that antihistamines can make you drowsy). If you're looking to save money, check labels--you might find a generic sleep aid that's cheaper than an antihistamine or vice versa!

BTW if you are coughing up or blowing out green stuff, get to a doctor right away for some antibiotics (I know, I know, it's pretty gross!).

Hope you feel better, {{{{{caravaggio}}}}}!

Get some of those zinc Coldeze lozenges. I used them when I came down with a cold a couple of weeks ago & they really do shorten the length of a cold--my was gone in a couple of days.

My grandmother in law suggests echinachia (you can get at drug/health food stores). She is in her 80's and I have a hard time keeping up with her (I am 32), so when she suggests something I am apt to listen. :0)

caravaggio,

Nope, not a doc, but I'm a singer and I know LOTS about what's needed to make me feel better faster! It pays to know that, because if my ear/nose/throat specialist is not available, I pretty much have to tell another doctor (whos unused to singers) what to look for and what I need. (I also read labels, 'cause I'm not about to pay brand name prices when I can get a cheaper generic!) I'm glad to hear you're on antibiotics--Zithromax is a very good one. I had Augmentin last month, and it cost me over $90 because I haven't met my deductible yet!

BTW one way to help avoid getting sick from airplane travel is to get a saline nasal spray (brand name is Ocean, but generics are widely available). Airplane air is very dry, and everyone's germs get recirculated. When the mucous membranes in your nasal passages dry out, they are MUCH more susceptible to germs.
