I was in the process of closing my payhell account and noticed it says I can not reopen it OR open another account. What is the reasoning behind this....pure spite? What if in the future they get their act together...OK I admit that is extremely doubtful, but what if I wanted to open a new account 6 months from now? Why don't they want to let you?

The last remaining adult left PayPal earlier this week. The kids are home alone.

Bill Clinton will go 48 hours without telling a lie before this happens.

Just wait a couple days. Chances are, that message will be gone or changed by then. It seems that every other notice, announcement, and policy seems to either disappear or morph into something entirely different.

Although, now that I think about it, you better close it before they add a new fee for that too.

I closed my PayPal account yesterday. The "you can never come back" theme did cause me a moment's pause too. A whole string of "what ifs" played through my mind - everything from a buyer who didn't know any better sending me money (after all - you can send money to anyone with an e-mail address ) to a family member sending me money to help buy Mom's Christmas present. Then it dawned on me that this was precisely what PayPal wants you to do before you close the account. If you think of enough hypotheticaly things and circumstances you will leave the account open which is, of course, the whole idea.

Can't you just hear the PayPal gang?
"Neener, neener, neener. If you leave the clubhouse, you can't ever come back. Serves you right. So there!"

No wonder so many dot coms are hurting.

I'd love to close my account, but I keep getting the message "Your account cannot be closed at this time". What gives, no balance in it, I don't get it. I did changer my email so no more bidders who don't read send money to me thru paypal, I'm sick and tired of sending it back and explaining what payment options I DO accept. I kept the stupic paypal account with the intent that I might need it as a buyer down the road...there are still a lot of sellers taking it. But, now I just want out...I'm discouraged with the whole thing, and it won't even let me leave...kind of like trying to drop the kids at the sitter "No mommy you can't go now!"
very frustrating.

Well I closed it. I don't think I would ever want to rejoin anyway. My next question and action is to contact the bank and find out if I need to do anything to be sure they can't dip their sticky claws into my account for ANY reason in the future. I am afraid just closing the account does not keep them out. Any thoughts?

They (paypal) can continue to hold you accountable for any chargebacks or fraudulent payments accepted on your behalf. To recover these funds, they can "reverse" previous deposits to your bank account and essentially withdraw the money at will. The only way to protect against this is to close your bank account.

Ouch! They won't close accounts on request?

This is a particularly bad situation for all of us. Time to talk to the Attorney General's office.

I haven't been able to draw out my money OR close my account! I keep getting the message that checks won't be mailed to a PO Box unless you add a bank account. Sorry! My Credit Union frowns on these types of transfers, viewing them as a business transaction. I have made numerous phone calls to PayPal plus emailed and faxed them information they requested. Still can't draw any checks or close the account.

Paintpower- I read in another thread an interesting trick someone used to get PayPal to mail them a check to their PO. They got the physical address of the post office, and disguised the box number as an apartment number. Sounds like it might work... heh.

I'm really wanting to cancel my account right now, but I'm kind of stuck. I've got one transaction to company as a presale on a PS2. They seem legit, but if they do end up being fraudulent, I'm scared that with my account closed, PayPal will be even less likely to talk to me than they are now.

I only pay one bill online (My CC company- and I'll re-register with them)... I'm seriously considering asking the bank to set me up with a new account number just so PayPal doesn't have access to it anymore. The idea of them taking money out of my bank account when I cancel payment on a CC purchase... oi.

This works for me:

Use post office's street address, but after it add the line Box 1234 or whatever your PO box number is.

It will look something like this:

John Doe
5151 Maple Ave.
Box 1234
Anytown, Anystate 12345

This is the way my eBay address is listed and the address that I use to receive all payments. The post office explained to me that you can use ANY street address you want, even a non-existing one.

When the PO sorts the mail, they start at the bottom, with the zip code and work up from there. As long as the box number is listed BELOW the street address, the item goes to he PO box. But be sure to use the zip code for PO boxes, not mail routes. They are often different. Ask you postmaster to be sure about your situation.
