Ok, I was one of the people who kept defending Paypal, convinced they were the greatest thing since the invention of the wheel, until it happened to me. I had a buyer win several auctions from me. Then she hee-haws around for nearly a month, stalling on sending payment. The best part is, that she blamed Paypal for her problems, saying that the way they process e-checks is misleading, so it caused her to bounce checks from her non-Paypal checking account. When I finally told her enough, if I don't get the money within 5 days, I will turn her in for non-pay, she Paypals the money the same day. BUT, she takes it upon herself to deduct $1.75 from her shipping amount and tell me to ship the items first class instead of priority as had been previously agreed. Stupid me, I figured just send the stuff first class and get rid of her.

Exactly one week from the time she paid, she has the nerve to file a complaint with Paypal that she has not gotten her merchandise. I responded to the Paypal inquiry with the info they requested. Today she e-mailed that she had gotten her stuff, it was nice, thank you, but why had I sent her money back? So I looked at my Paypal account, and with no notice to me, they removed the money from my account and gave it back to her!!!!!! So now she has the money and the merchandise!!! I called Paypal, and they said, oh, well, we will investigate for 30 days, and then decide who should get the money!!! Isn't that a no-brainer?!?! If she has the stuff, I should get the money!!! They had the nerve to try to tell me they're not taking sides! EXCUSE ME?!?!? You took my money on nothing more than her word, isn't that taking sides?!?!?!?!? I will lose the interest on the money at the very least, if not lose the money entirely. All on the word of someone who took over a month from auction end to pay!!! The Hot Place will freeze over before I ever say another nice thing about Paypal!

Clearly, there is more to this story.

Can you put some dates on it, and explain:

I responded to the Paypal inquiry with the info they requested.

In particular, did your response include proof of shipment?

Hi piggypoosmom,

I am sorry to hear of your issues with the transaction.

Did you follow the guidelines of the Seller Protection Program to protect yourself against a Buyer Complaint (or a charge back)? The Seller Protection team would be looking for information relative to shipping, etc.)

Her auctions ended May 21 and 22. She didn't get around to paying until June 13. She filed the complaint with Paypal June 21. (8 days later) I responded the following morning, when I received the e-mail, with the full story of the situation, including the fact that she had waited almost a moneth to pay, she had changed her postage amount, and all the other crap I went through with this person. I said that I did not have a tracking number, but did have proof of mailing. No one from Paypal asked to see the proof of mailing (USPS Insured receipt), they just took my money out of my account, without telling me. She e-mailed to tell me that she had received the merchandise the day after she made the complaint. When I told her what was going on, she said she would contact Paypal. She e-mailed to say that she had spoken with a rep on the phone, and gave the rep's name. The rep said the money would be returned to my account, but it hasn't yet. God only knows when Paypal with get around to it.

Furthermore, I was going to try to send two payments by Paypal tonight. Their little stunt about taking my money has put my account into the negative by $11.43. The first payment I sent, I received a message saying that they would also deduct an additional $11.43 to bring my account out of a negative balance. OK, fine. The second payment, I got the same message again. They overcharged my bank account $11.43 a second time. How many times do you idiots need to deduct the $11.43?!?!? It's your fault that my account is in the negative in the first place!

As soon as I get my money back, I am closing this account. I would certainly urge anyone else with a Paypal account to do the same.

Can you forward the information to me at [email protected]?

I suggest you complain to the Better Business Bureau. PayPal has an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB, their lowest rating. Perhaps if they have that rating long enough they will make changes...

You can complain to the BBB by clicking here.

The MAIN problem here is the seller, not PayPal...Did you not get leary after she took so long, and gave you "stories"... I read so many posts in here and there is always one key element that the seller did or did not do... Let's not bash paypal without getting the full story...

How does this work out as the seller's fault? Notice two key sentences: No one from Paypal asked to see the proof of mailing (USPS Insured receipt), they just took my money out of my account, without telling me. and The rep said the money would be returned to my account, but it hasn't yet.

Of course this is your fault, piggy. Your failings are detailed clear as day right in the TOU.

Anything said by any of PayPal's reps holds no validity, and can be ignored by PayPal at any time with no explanation.

Paypal has answered all your questions, so expect this thread to be locked soon.

Have a nice day, and please use PayPal again soon [ edited by purplehaze1967 on Jun 26, 2001 01:01 PM ]

Please explain to me where I went wrong. I did not issue any personal attacks. I simply re-iterated, in a relavent thread, exactly what happened to me.

I did not lie, exaggerate, or attempt to mislead anyone. Since my claim was never re-opened, my questions were never answered, and any threads asking for these answers were locked, I am reduced to malingering from the sidelines.

I am sorry I cannot be more positive about PayPal, but if you take I look at my history, I hope you can understand why. If, at any time, paypaldamon or any other Paypal rep opts to provide satisfactory answers to my questions, I'll consider my situation minimally 'resolved'. Until that time, I hope you can respect my opinions, even though you may not necessarily agree with them.

The plot thickens. The buyer is now claiming that I sent her one incorrect lot, and that I must replace that lot before she will confirm to Paypal that I have sent her items. I have already sent in a copy of the postal receipt for the original package, and now have sent in the tracking number for the additional lot that she has extorted, but a Paypal rep told me on the phone that they will not even make a decision as to who should get the money for THIRTY FIVE DAYS!!!!! I have sent the info to damon@paypal. I will let you know if I hear anything different.

The PayPal TOU actually gives PayPal an unlimited amount of time to investigate.

* * *

New time-saving feature. I will complete the ping-pong.

PayPal: We try to investigate within 30 days.

Me: Yeah, but your TOU...

PayPal: We try to investigate within 30 days.

Me: Why is it when it doesn't sound good, you downplay the TOU? When it is to your advantage, you say the TOU is all that matters?

PayPal: [dead silence]

Me: Like that situation with PurpleHaze -

PayPal: Loggia, you are disruptive.

Me: Why because I am quoting your TOU?

AuctionWatch: Everyone, please show posters the proper respect.

Me: Huh?

I quoted almost word-for-word the actual responses received in the past by myself and others.

It seems lately any post that points out the disrespect shown by PayPal to its customers is flagged.

And no, I cannot discuss moderation issues through email since the last time I tried that my email was forwarded to PayPal without my permission and in violation of your privacy policy.

I am still waiting for an apology concerning that.

I am still waiting for an apology concerning that.

What is up with these folks and their refusal to apologize to customers who feel they have been wronged? Is it really that hard to do? as far as I am concerned, there is no situation that cannot be helped, at least a little, with the issuance of a sincere apology. Must be like the Fonz and his inability to say 'I was wrong' - the best he could ever do was "I was wr...I was wr...I was wr". But at least he tried.

Just curious. If this item had had a tracking number, could not PayPal just go to the Postal Service website, pop in the tracking number and see that it had been shipped? If that is the case, then every PayPal transaction should require a tracking number and if the buyer wants to use PayPal they should be prepared to pay for the tracking number. If you are sending first class, then it would be the Certified/Registered fee (never can remember which it is). If they don't want to pay that extra fee then they should not be allowed to pay with PayPal.

Easier than that. The seller could pull up the tracking page and send it as a page directly to PayPal. They wouldn't even have to go look it up - just read their email!

The slowness of PayPal response to problems like this is telling me that they either have a huge backlog of complaints to research, or they are understaffed. Which is it?

This is hilarious, or it would be if it were not true.

Sorry PIGGYPOOSMOM but you have just fallen foul of the PayPal system. Those wronged will receive no support from PayPal, those who do the wrong will be protected by PayPal and will be justified by some clause in their policies. Never mind what the right thing to do is, so long as it can be explained away in the policy.

Oh yes, and then there is the value of using this forum to either vent or seek suggestions as to how to resolve your problems.

The PayPal'eers will all chime in to tell you how many ways that you were wrong, often without having any if not all of the facts.

Occasionally you will find a kind sole who will offer a tidbit of help but in most cases, as well intentioned as it is, it will be simply to complain to the BBB and the FTC, which while it may give you an ounce of self satisfaction, will do nothing to hold PayPal accountable and thus will likely have no long term affect.

Finally, should you get close to a nerve you will find that auctionwatch and PayPal are joined at the hip and like any good authoritarian regime, you will be censored for the good of the system.

If you have any doubts as to the last suggestion I would ask you which has proven to be the more successful method for contacting PayPals customer service and most people would tell you that you get virtually nothing other than canned responses from PayPals own site and that you have to come here. Its not much better but apparently many have been sucessful at getting T-Shirts out of Damon here at least.

Let them eat cake!

How long can it be before the TOU will contain a small clause that says that you will forgo all of your constitutional rights upon acceptance of this service and just visiting the site constitutes acceptance therof etc etc.

Congratulations on your conversion from the blindly bullish on PayPal to the ranks of the educated. Sorry that the trip was bumpy and I hope that you get resolution. At least in your case the buyer seems somewhat ethical and once PayPal have got their act together I think you should get your money but when you do, don't forget the trials that you have been through and reconsider who in future you want to trust with your money.

Good Luck.

Paypal damon is no help at all. I contacted him regarding a transaction that was made thru my credit card which they ended up taking the money, $141.00 from my bank account without me knowing. Not doing they had took the money from my bank account I ended up getting 3 overdraft charges from the bank for $28.00 each and one of them was for a $6.03 debit charge. I have closed my account and will never use Paypal again.
Paypal Damon's name should be Damon Paypal's pal.
