You heard it here first. Next Tuesday is a Free Listing Day. Sort of...

"Special Free Listing Day
Tuesday, October 28 is a special Free Listing Day -- any item that starts at 99 cents with no reserve price can be submitted for free!
For one day only, between 12:01 a.m. PT and 11:59 p.m. PT, we've waived the listing fees on every item you submit with a 99-cent starting price and no reserve price.

Buyers, mark your calendars and get ready to bid! This free listing day should generate tons of bargains in all categories.

Sellers, it's free to list all your items starting at 99 cents with no reserve! Plus you can upload multiple images; submit many items at once using the Bulk Loader; and use the Seller's Manager to track your inventory -- all at no additional cost!

Yeah. I have very little that I would list for $0.99, and even then I wouldn't want to go to a lot of effort.

I might try a few things, but nothing really good is going up at that price.

You're only saving a nickel an item, and taking a risk that the item won't be bid up at all.

I don't like this is worded either. I wonder how many people will read this and not notice the <.99 thing? When I first read it, I thought it was a real free listing day.

Saves only a nickel. Does Yahoo want to be known as a very low cost items auction? I admit that that is the area where ebay is most vulnerable to competition.
Might be way too little way too late.

edited to add:

I know what might happen with a lot of sellers. They will list $5 items and raise the s/h by $4 and state no combining of auction wins. Then the Yahoo bidders will learn all about shipping gouging and non combining of wins. Great way to treat the buyers. The 99 cent no reserve gambit ONLY works with $1 items that will not receive a second bid and ebay where there is traffic to make the item go higher and justify the risk. This is a total bonehead move by Yahoo and now the saved auctions will start scrolling off the Yahoo servers as three months is passing since the last FLD and they have said all unrelisted auctions will be removed from their servers after 3 months.

My opinion is they want the low starting items to increase bidding and the sell through rate on the site. Time will tell if it has an effect, but they are giving sellers enough advance notice.

I can see they want to increase bidding with the free nickel offering but the seller takes all the risk of losing a good item at a buck. The risk that Yahoo is taking is losing many more sellers from even taking the time to do the FLDs in the future.

Dont forget yahoo doesnt make much FVF on dollar items either. They have a reason to do this, but what it could be I dont have a clue.

The Yahoo Auctions management has never had a clue. In theory it sounds great to say start at a buck with no reserve to encourage bidding. Heck, that rarely even works at ( one bid if your lucky ebay ) any more.

I can't back Yahoo on this one either. Since their listing fee is only a nickle to start with, this simply isn't going to get quality items listed for buyers to bid upon.

Maybe they should have a FLD with items of $10 or higher only quailifying. Then buyers would be looking at items worth having.
