The Sunderland was used countering the threat posed by German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic.It also served in a rescue capacity. Built by the Short Brothers of Rochester, England. A Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Sunderland performed the type's first unassisted kill of a U-boat on 17 July 1940.Primary users where the Royal Air Force,French Navy, Royal Australian Air Force , Royal New Zealand Air Force. It had an endurance in excess of 13 hours and was equipped with bunks, a galley, a workshop and of course an anchor. The Sunderland's defensive capabilities, fourteen machineguns in all, led Luftwaffe fighter crews to nickname it the 'Flying Porcupine'. The type continued in front-line RAF service until its retirement in 1959.total of 155 Sunderland Mark 5,s were built with another 33 Mark IIIs converted to Mark 5 specification. With the end of the war, large contracts for the Sunderland were cancelled and the last of these flying boats was delivered in June 1946
