ANCIENT ROMAN BATTLE AXE HEAD: 1st - 3rd CENTURY AD THIS IS THE TYPE AND SIZE AN INDIVIDUAL SOLDIER WOULD CARRY........... QUITE A RARE FIND! I WAS IN AN ACIENT RIVER BED. THE RIVER LONG SINCE GONE LOOKING FOR ANCIENT ROMAN ARROWHEADS. I HAD FOUND ONE NEARBY AND SEVERAL ALONG WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BANKS. LOOKING ALONG THE BANKS IN THE ROCKS I FOUND THIS AXE BLADE. AT FIRST I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I HAD FOUND. I TURNED IT AROUND AND REALIZED WHAT IT ACTUALLY WAS. WITH THE ARROWHEADS I HAD FOUND THIS MUST HAVE BEEN A BATTLE AREA. ONE ARMY TRYING TO CROSS THE RIVER AND THE OTHER TRYING TO STOP THEM. IT COULD HAVE BEEN AN AMBUSH. AN ARMY CROSSING THE RIVER IS AT A WEAK POINT. THIS IS A VERY HEAVY, STURDY AXE BLADE. THIS MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE A BATTLE TO BREAK IT. IT IS: 6" BLADE TO END : 5 1/4" WIDE AT BLADE END WEIGHT: 169.0 GRAMS. ALMOST 6 OUNCES! IT HAS A LIGHT BROWN AND DARK PATINA FROM RUST, SOME SMALL RUST PITS. IT IS IN A SOLID VERY FINE CONDITION CONDITION. BROKEN ALMOST IN HALF.
