Boblbee Company Story
BOBLBEE was established in 1997 as a design and research hub for sports and recreational equipment. The small BOBLBEE brain trust comes with a variety of experiences from the sport and consumer goods market and includes a network of designers and professional users around the globe. Corporate headquarters are located in Torekov, southern Sweden, with product development and research carried out in Malmö, Copenhagen, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. BOBLBEE is owned by Global Act AB, the holding company, also active in product development for other products in the "edutainment" industry OUR BACKGROUND For years, Jonas Blanking has left his car at home in favor of his bike or a pair of roller skates to get to work. Always equipped with a backpack to accommodate working notes, sketches, a laptop and some gym wear it bothered him, that on the way, soggy books and an occasionally fractured laptop casing were the result of forgetting what he carried. An industrial designer by profession and with gathered experience in the automotive and sports industry, Jonas Blanking started to look around for a solution to improve his daily urban jaunts. One might think the obvious solution would be to buy a better backpack. But not so for Jonas Blanking! He began to look within the air cargo industry, which handles more small size shipping than any other industry in the world; an environment in which containers are tested to the extreme. He soon concluded that weight, handling and choice of material were an essential key to the development of a new backpack. To create a satisfying structure and an impact protective casing, Jonas Blanking researched the plastic and aluminum structures used for air cargo containers: how they where assembled and riveted; the type of screws used; how materials would react when exposed to different stress conditions and corrosive environments; all the while bearing in mind that todays teenager handles his gear like luggage crews at any airport. Combining a sturdy structure with a soft body was initially not an obvious decision. However, living hand in hand with one?s equipment did not permit ergonomics to be taken for granted. It became evident in the initial development phase that the problem of combining a soft body with a hard shell would be the most difficult and challenging part of the process. Several mock-ups and models were produced during the fall of 1996, resulting in a working prototype for testing. Due to the initial research from the air cargo industry, a very unconventional design and with a unique combination of materials, proved to be strong and protective, yet light, comfortable and ergonomically sound. During the first test period it became obvious that the structure was much more versatile than first anticipated . Jonas Blanking, his friends and colleagues, Patrik Bernstein and Sam Bonnier, experimented with fastening devices to create a carrying system suitable for their daily requirements, aware that contemporary backpack users do not have a specific profile. Today the speeding skateboarder could easily be a computer professional on his way to the office. The Monocoque Hardshell gave way to a total "re-thinking" of strapping gear to your backpack. For the first time a permanent external frame to build upon existed, making it possible to exactly position the fastening devices both on the inside and on the outside of the pack. The Monocoque Hardshell, The Cargo Internal System and The Cargo External System created a very versatile combination of transporting high tech equipment together with soiled shoes or skates, protecting equipment, gear, backpack and the carrier. At the end of the twentieth century, our urban gear needs to reflect the rapidly changing environment and behavior of modern society. The first BOBLBEE Monocoque Hardshell backpack was produced in April 1998. The Megalopolis was their first and is their most popular backpack to date. Using a design that reminds some of a toboggan or even a jetpack, it has the ability to make one distinct from the crowds. The design is so influential in fact that the Megalopolis and other lines have been greatly imitated, although these fakes are on the decline. So individual is the form that the Megalopolis (and the identical but smaller Peoples Delite) have appeared as accessories in movies such as Charlie's Angels, Hitch, Jason X, The Fast And The Furious, The Italian Job and also Bicentennial Man, for which the pack could be considered futuristic for the movie's time setting.
