There is a main compartment with snap-on closures. The main compartment has a soft lining to protect your laptop and other fine items. There is a divider inside to separate your laptop from your papers, pens, and other essentials. There is a Velcro strap over one of the divided compartments to keep your laptop snug. On the outside of the main compartment but covered by the main flap is another compartment to hold your important papers and it is closed with Velcro. On the outside of that compartment is another zippered compartment for even more important papers. On the outside of that are two smaller compartments, one for a cell phone and another with a mesh see through lining for items such as an ID or whatever you would like to see when you open the main flap. Beside that is a strap with a key chain attached. There is a zipper that goes from the top completely around the briefcase and once unzipped makes the briefcase much larger to hold a lot of belongings and could even be used as a small travel bag. Note: Your laptop should not be anymore than 16 inches (side to side) by 10.5 inches (top to bottom). The 10.5 inches being the main measurement and you should not go any more than that (for the zipper to close). You could go a little bit more than 16 inches as the sides will go out some. When people talk about screen sizes sometimes they talk about measuring "width" and some measure it diagonally (from a lower corner to an opposite upper corner-this is the proper way to measure it). This bag will hold a laptop which measures up to 17 inches diagonally-not wide. Please measure your laptop and make sure it falls within the limits listed above. Of course if your laptop is too big the bag also makes a great Breifcase.
