Antique Bennington Pottery Ben Franklin Toby Jug Boot Handle c 1850
Antique Rockingham glaze toby jug in the pattern known as "Ben Franklin" from Bennington Pottery, circa 1850. This piece always makes me laugh, with the slightly manic expression on the drinker's face (he's clearly feeling no pain) and the leg and boot shaped handle. It stands 5 3/4 inches tall and is original Bennington Pottery ware, cf Barret, Bennington Pottery & Porcelain, Plate 416. It has a mottled Rockingham brown glaze and a flat base, also marks of its Bennington origin. The toby weighs 1 lb 2 oz (shipping weight 2 lb).
Condition: Very good overall. There is a manufacturing defect on one side of the handle where something stuck to the pitcher in the kiln. There are also a couple of fleabites in the glaze just at the very base of the body, where the surface turns a sharp corner. Please view the detail photos below.
