Early Blue-Printed English Pottery and Porcelain Transferware The clever discovery of decorating china by transfer-printing copper engraving, made in the 1750s, allowed the growing English middle class to enjoy china that closely resembled the expensive hand-painted Chinese Export porcelain which until then had been the preserve of the wealthy. This early pearlware (called so because of the lustre imparted by its blue-tinted glaze) and soft paste porcelain transferware has a detailed, hand made charm that has long attracted collectors. Whether it imitates Chinese Export, or is derived from prints of the Orient, or comes out of the creative imagination of the English engravers, you can get a unique glimpse of history with every piece.
