John Cassin Wm Hitchcock Original Bird Lithograph "The Mexican Wren" 19th C
John Cassin (1813 - 1869) was a leading ornithologist of his time, and the Amercas' first taxonomist. Cassin, drew, printed and hand-colored many of the illustrations for the railroad surveys as the Western regions of the United States were explored. He was named Curator of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences in 1842, and after John T. Bowen's death, he took control of that firm. His illustrations were intended to be a three volume work, but financial considerations prevented more than one volume being published. These stone lithographs, with hand-coloring, were issued by Cassin as a supplement to John J. Audubon's The Birds of America as Audubon completed his octavo edition before he could collect many of the Western birds. In many cases, these prints are some of the first published images of America's birds. Most of the drawings were executed on stone by William E. Hitchcock, with some of the earlier drawings done by George G. White and transferred to stone. All were lithographs and beautifully hand-colored by J.T. Bowen, Audubon's lithographer.
Offered for sale is this original hand colored lithograph published in the mid 19th century. The image is titled "The Mexican Wren" and is captioned "On Stone by Wm. E. Hitchcock" and "Lith., Printed & Col'd by J.T. Bowen Phil."
The frame measures 17 inches tall by 13 3/4 inches wide. The image is 8 3/4 inches tall by 5 1/4 inches wide. It weighs 2 lbs 8 oz (shipping weight 5 lbs).
Condition: The lithograph is in good condition with a light scratch across the lower of the two blue flowers. It is in a modern carved wooden frame with flowers carved in the four corners. The frame is in good condition aside from a few very minor scrapes. Please see the detail photos below.

USPS First Class Mail for small packages that weigh less than 12 oz.
USPS Priority Mail for lightweight orders that fit in a box 12" square and under.
USPS Parcel post or UPS Ground for heaver and larger items that weigh more than a pound or fit in a box 14" square and over.
Paintings, prints and other large pieces are shipped using the best carrier on a case by case basis.
