Rare Herculaneum Pearlware Prattware Pitcher dated 1797 18th Century
Here is a particularly beautiful and graceful antique molded Prattware polychrome pitcher with a unique design. The body is fluted and painted with flowers, while the shoulder and base are decorated with acanthus leavers and foliage scrollwork against a stippled background. The molding is picked out in cobalt blue and orange. The pitcher has a "sparrow beak" and decorative strap handle. It is dated on the base to 1797. A very old paper label identifies it as being made by Herculaneum Pottery of Liverpool. The blue of the pearlware glaze can be seen wherever it pools by the raised designs.
The pitcher is 7 1/4 inches tall. It weighs only 15 oz (shipping weight 2 lb).
Condition: Shows very well. The spout has been professionally repaired, very expertly, as shown. There a small spider in one side of the body, and a firing crack on one side of the base of the handle. This last is original to manufacture. Fine clear crazing of the glaze as you would expect on 18th century earthenware.
