Villeroy & Boch Green Souvenir Pin Tray Roxbury 1st Parish Meeting House 19th c
Here is an unusual item, an early souvenir pin tray showing the 1st Parish Meeting House in West Roxbury. The pin tray was made by Villeroy and Boch. What's interesting is that from the style of the tray and the maker's mark, this piece dates to circa 1890 to 1900, which makes it a very early example of photo-lithography on ceramics, as the picture of the Meeting House is clearly taken from a photograph, not an engraving. The process of photo-lithography came into practical use about 1885. The use of a translucent green glaze over molded ceramic to give varying shades was very popular in the ceramic arts of the late 19th century -- for example, in the art tiles of the period. The tray is also stamped with some numbers "8936" -- 89 may be a date code -- and "JMcD&S", showing that it was commissioned by Jones, McDuffie & Stratton, one of the largest china importers in Boston.
The pin tray is 8 3/4 inches long by 6 3/8 inches wide. It weighs 10 oz (shipping weight 1 lbs).
The tray is in very good condition, with no chips or cracks. It does have overall fine clear crazing of the glaze.

USPS First Class Mail for small packages that weigh less than 12 oz.
USPS Priority Mail for lightweight orders that fit in a box 12" square and under.
USPS Parcel post or UPS Ground for heaver and larger items that weigh more than a pound or fit in a box 14" square and over.
Paintings, prints and other large pieces are shipped using the best carrier on a case by case basis.
We will always combine shipping wherever possible.
