Taking the small-footprint desktop PC to its logical extreme, Dell's OptiPlex SX260 is a study in compactness that should fit most offices, but doesn't ignore centralised management issues.…

 

Don't mistake the tiny Dell OptiPlex SX260 for a thin client, 'dumb' terminal or Web appliance. This mini-system is about the size of a thick dictionary but packs a desktop Pentium 4 or Celeron processor and runs the full Windows XP Professional operating system. It's aimed at offices where space is tight, such as call centres, broking houses and hospitals, and can be installed on top of or under a desk.

 

WHAT'S HOT: The OptiPlex SX260 is the most compactly designed of Dell's PCs. Aimed at offices with space constraints, it measures just 3.3 by 9.7 by 9.5 inches, about half the size of a typical OptiPlex midsize tower system. Attractively designed in black with silver accents, the unit can sit horizontally on a desk or rest vertically in the included stand. Optional attachments let you mount it horizontally under a desktop or attach it to a wall. Using a special stand, you can even mount it vertically behind the 15-inch UltraSharp 1504FP LCD, with space to store the keyboard under the monitor.

The system's modular notebook drive bay is compatible with optical drive modules designed for the Latitude C notebook series; our test system came with an 8X DVD-ROM and 24X/10X/24X CD-RW combination drive. The PC includes parallel, serial, and integrated gigabit ethernet, as well as six USB 2.0 ports (two on the case front). For the security conscious, these ports can be disabled remotely, so a disgruntled employee can't copy data onto USB storage drives.

IT professionals will appreciate the SX260's serviceability and security. A latch on the back serves double duty. When it is pressed up, the side panels unhinge and slip off, allowing access to the PC's interior. When pressed down, the latch releases a thin door that covers the 40GB hard-drive compartment. Beneath the hard-drive panel, an included cable cover can be attached with a slot that locks down the hard drive, motherboard and I/O connectors. Network administrators can download OpenManage Client Administrator software to handle system-wide tasks such as tracking hardware and software inventory and pushing software to clients from a browser-based interface!
