by World Renowned Emminence LEONARD E BOYLE; 1923 -1999, Verifying this Set Is at the Very Mimimum Almost 11 Years Old Relic, Since His Passing, OCTOBER 25, 1999.
Following, Please Read a Brief Summary of This Remarkable Man.
Father Leonard Eugene Boyle (November 13, 1923 – October 25, 1999) was an Irish and Canadian scholar in medieval studies and paleography and was the first Irish and North American Prefect of the Vatican Library in Rome from 1984 to 1997.
Born in Ballintra, County Donegal, Ireland. Boyle spent some years in Tralee following the death in 1940 of his older brother John. The latter was a member of the police (Garda Siochana) and drowned while on holiday in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry July 1940 and acted as Boyle's father following the death of his mother 1933. Leonard was educated in Gaelic and entered the Dominican Order in 1943. He was ordained a priest in 1949 having received his doctorate in Oxford. He frequently visited Tralee, where a number of his family still reside, and he was involved in many projects in the town. His immense knowledge and expertise in historical and archaeological issues was freely given in order to enhance the town. Of particular concern was his hope that the site of the original Dominican Abbey at the centre of the town be conserved for future archaeological excavation. After moving to Toronto, he taught at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies and at the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto from 1961 to 1984.
In 1984 he was appointed Prefect of the Vatican Library by Pope John Paul II. This appointment took Boyle by surprise but would appear to have been recognition of his immense scholarship, expertise in antiquity and renowned interest in learning as a whole. In an effort to modernize the Vatican Library, Father Boyle set about the digitization of the library's many thousands of manuscripts that dated from hundreds of years BC, which would lead to their greater availability to scholars around the world. Boyle also extended the opening hours of the library and employed women for the first time as part of the library's staff. In 1987, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Known for his wit and independence of mind and spirit, Boyle was once asked of his interest in being a Cardinal given the fact that all of his predecessors went on to be Cardinals. His reply was in the negative saying 'nothing but the papacy' would do him.
Father Boyle was buried in his beloved Basilica di San Clemente, in 2000 a year after his death, following official desire to give him the honour of interment in the vaults of San Clemente - one of Rome's holiest and most historical shrines.
ANRI – A Passion for Wood
Gröden is the heart of the southern Tyrol, the holiday valley of the Dolomites. Woodcarving was practiced in the valley as early as the Middle Ages. The early carvings were utilitarian, but in time became a highly skilled art form and sacred art became a prominent subject matter. The Rifferser family has been one of the leaders in producing wood carvings since the 19th Century. ANRI – an acronym for Anton RIffeser- was founded in 1912, with the purpose/goal of creating carvings of the highest quality possible that could be duplicated and shipped around the world. Each figure is a testimony to the skills and passion for wood of the men and women at ANRI.
ANRI- A Passion for Details
Famous artists and modelers from around the world have created unique designs that the skilled workers at ANRI transform into beautifully detailed wood carved figures. Each figure passes through 16 different stages of carving and painting and four quality control areas before receiving the ANRI seal. The seal is ANRI's certificate of guarantee of wood carving at the highest level. ANRI's exclusive designs are collected by connoisseurs all over the world.
The artist's studio
On an average, it takes about three months to create an ANRI figure. The process begins with the purchase of 80 year old maple trees from plantations in France. Only the best and healthiest trees are selected and only about 20% of these meet the ANRI standards. These logs are air dried for up to 3 years and then cut into blocks which are kiln dried to reduce moisture to 10%. It is from this stock that the wood is sized for figures and placed in storage. Artists create original prototypes from the designs that are selected to become ANRI figures. From these prototypes special models are prepared so that each figure can be accurately duplicated. As this process is taking place, blocks of wood are roughly shaped to meet the requirements of that particular figure. Then the special model is worked by hand to duplicate its form. From that stage the figure is inspected and if approved goes into the hand finishing sculpture studio where details are completed. After each figure goes through a process of sealing the wood, it travels to the hand painting studio. Here the painters carefully detail each figure with transparent oil paints so that the wood grain remains visible. After drying, each figure is again inspected and the ANRI seal is applied, then it goes to the storage where it is carefully wrapped in ANRI logo tissue and put into a box that is properly labeled and eventually starts its journey to collectors in every corner of the globe. |
