It is an herbaceous annual or perennial twining liana. It grows 2-4 meters tall. The leaves are arranged in spirals and are 3-7 cm long with a 1.5-6 cm long petiole. It has blue trumpet-shaped flowers 4-9 cm in diameter with a white to golden yellow centre. These seeds are considered sacred to many Mexican Native American cultures and were known to the Aztecs as tlitliltzin, the Nahuatl word for "black" with a reverential suffix.
