Troops Called Up To Bring Civil Rest
During The "Great Chicago Fire" Of 1871
At the time of the Great Chicago Fire,
Lt.Gen.P.H.Sheridan was Headquartered
in Chicago, Ill. as Commander of the Military
Division of the Missouri & called up these
troops to make sure that looting was kept to
a minimum & assistance was given the public.

Chicago, Illinois, October 13, 1871

Special Orders
No. 72

The "Sterling City Guards," "Rock Fall Zouaves,"
"Springfield Volunteerd," Bloomington National Guards,"
and "Champaign Cadets," are hereby relieved from duty
in this city to return to their homes.
In parting with these troops, the Lieutenant General of
the Army expresses his high appreciation of their
cheerfulness and promptness with which they came
forward, and the value of the service they have rendered.
