Original Letter from General Sheridan to General Wm. E. Strong
regarding the Statue in Honor of General U.S. Grant that was to
be placed in the City of Chicago....in fact, this 1891 Statue by the
Sculptor Louis Rebisso's is located at the South Enterance of
Lincoln Park~Overlooking the Pond to the West, and a Parking
Lot to the East...Beautiful...GOOGLE to View.

Letter Reads:
Headquarters Army of the United States
Washington, D.C.  March 2nd 1887

My Dear General:
In regard to the equestrian statue of General Grant. I do
not believe it necessary to be too accurate as to details,
and I am very well pleased with the photographs of it
you send me.
If I can offer any objection to the horse, it is that his
attention seems to be directed to some such object as a
mare~in fact his pose suggests that of smelling something.

The side view of General Grant does look slightly stooped,
but very slightly, not enought to become a positive defect.
The bridle hand is too low; to be ? it should be raised to the
height of the elbow. The reins, bridle, cheek-pieces, brow band
and breast

strap. should be heavier.
General Grant very seldom wore top boots. I prefer the 
brass~mounted, unhooded stirrup, and I would have him
represented as wearing the uniform of the highest rank
he attained~that of General. He always wore his coat
unbuttoned at the top and turned back.

I earnestly hope you will be successful in obtaining a
statue that will be creditable to Chicago.
