Bass
fishermen exclaim that they have witnessed this event when pursuing the striped
bass. “When the gannet’s circle and dive on the alewives you know the bass
are below!”
“…while
trolling in the ocean look for birds and schools of bait on your fish finder.
Gannets are a key sign to finding the bait. These are large white birds with
black tips on their wings. If you see them diving into the water, there’s a
school of bait fish below them. And where there’s bait, the fish should be
close by. Slowly troll towards the working birds and work the outer edges of
the bait school. This is where the larger fish will hang out.”
Born in 1950, Jerry Ellis grew up
on the Lower Peninsula in Tidewater Virginia. As a youth he spent hours along
the banks of the James River exploring the tidal woodlands. Mr. Ellis’ work has
been published by the National Wild
Turkey Federation, Virginia Wildlife Magazine, North
Carolina Wildlife Magazine (cover); he
illustrated the book Wildlife Neighbors
of the Williamsburg Area (a regional nature guide), and the limited
printing of 29 copies of Beloved Waters
by Paul Ford, privately published by Meadow Run Press in 2000. He has also been
a contributor to Ducks Unlimited.
His work has been displayed in the gold room of the Easton Waterfowl Festival. Critics have called Ellis “A Major
Talent.” Jerry has fished and photographed nature across North America.
