Loudoun County, Virginia. Stampless cover. Postmarked: Jan 22. Washington City
D. C. 10 x 7-15/16 inches. 1 page with integral address leaf. A few tears/holes
on address page. An unobtrusive 1 inch hole and tear where the wax seal was
attached. Overall very good condition.
“…just returned from a visit to the President and
Secretary of War. Mr. Buchanan accompanied us and interested himself deeply in
Richard’s favour. Mr. Mercer gave him a strong letter of reammenda now, which
has an favorable effect. The Secretary of War regretted that he was committed
to Mr Mason of Fairfax but, said if there was a vacancy between this and next
year he should have it… Mr Buchanan and myself thought best…

brother of Lloyd and “Richard” herein mentioned is Maj William’s nephew, the
son of the addressee “Lloyd Noland.” They are seeking an appointment to the
United States Military Academy (West Point) for Richard.

Thomson Mason was born on 17 August 1818 at Gunston Hall in Fairfax County,
Virginia. Descendant of the founding Father George Mason. (Appointed Va.) Class
of 1843
Military History. — Cadet at the Military Academy,
July 1, 1838, to July 1, 1842 and in the War with Mexico, 1846, being engaged
in the Skirmish of La Rosia, near Ft. Brown, Texas, where he was killed, Apr.
25, 1846: Aged 27.
