“On
December 1, Charles accompanied by Nicolas Robert made a much more
spectacular flight than De Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes. More
scientifically conceived by Charles than the Montgolfiere flight
(even to the degree of carrying a thermometer and barometer as well
as sandbags), the first man-carrying hydrogen balloon remained aloft
for two hours and covered a distance of nearly twenty-five miles” -
