[Lincoln] [Post-War] [Reconciliation]
“The Last Offer of Reconciliation. In
Rememberance Of Prest. Lincoln's “The Door Is Open For All.” Dedicated to the
Memory of our most lamented late President Abraham Lincoln.”
Issued shortly after
Lincoln's assassination, this elaborate construction illustrates Lincoln's
desire for reconciliation with the South by showing him extending a hand to
Confederate president Jefferson Davis. To the left are Generals U. S. Grant and
William Sherman, with two soldiers, Secretary of War Gideon Welles and
Secretary of State William H. Seward in front. Behind Davis, on the right, are
a mustachioed gentleman, General Robert E. Lee, a joyous slave and another man.
