Dimanche 19 Septembre 1909. - - - “April 6 Robert E. Peary,
Matthew Henson, and four Eskimos become the first men to reach the North
Pole. On September 6, when Peary
announces his accomplishment, he is informed that Frederick Albert Cook,
another American explorer, claims to have reached the Pole five days earlier;
the claim is later proved false.” - Linton. Surrounded by penguins, attired in artic
furs, one hand of each grabbing a magnificent American flag on staff, engaged
in physical assault on each other, these two Americans fight for the glory of
attaining the North Pole first. The
depiction is, simply stated, a magnificent graphic. It appears as the entire front cover of the
popular newspaper supplement Le Petit Journal for 19 September 1909
(Numero 983). We offer here the
complete eight page issue. Calvin D.
Linton's “The Bicentennial Almanac 200 Years of America,” p. 274.
