Ruffin is credited as "firing the first shot of the war" at the Battle of Fort Sumter (Swanberg’s First Blood. The Story of Fort Sumter. 1960). When the war ended in a Southern defeat in 1865, he committed suicide rather than submit to "Yankee rule" thus the “Last shot.”
