- - - Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865) Virginian, farmer,
printer, scientist, political activist, and slaveholder who is often accredited
with firing the first and last shots of the Civil War. Ruffin is credited as
"firing the first shot of the war" at the Battle of Fort Sumter (Swanberg’s
First Blood. The Story of Fort Sumter. 1960). When the war ended in a Southern
defeat in 1865, he committed suicide rather than submit to "Yankee
rule" thus the “Last shot.”
