& Shilling at the Troy Vulcan Works & the sound of Repeal! Repeal!! Is dying
away – The excitement which the intelligence from Monterey caused has not yet
delivered. The Gallant Worth.! He has fully recounted from his false ship and
now ____, his heart has long been aspiring. And yet what is it.? Empty
applause! Earthy phantom!” Page 2: Cushman discusses the plight of an American
missionary in Greece who has written a book and quoted the writings of some of
the fathers of the Greek Church and stated that the Virgin Mary is not a proper
object of worship but merely a created being. The king’s court has tried the
missionary and men propose to kill him. There is no Consul at Athens. “Cannot
our own Government do something, in behalf of an American Citizen (as all our missionaries
are). & make some demonstration in this case?” Signed: “John P. Cushman”
Historical Note:
John Paine Cushman, (1784-1848) a Representative
from New York; born in Pomfret, Conn.; graduated from Yale College in 1807;
studied law; practiced law in Troy, N.Y.; elected as a Federalist to the 15th
Congress (March 4, 1817-March 3, 1819) … engaged in the real estate business.
