Inscription: GEORGE WASHINGTON, / Commandant en Chef des Armées Américaines, / Né en Virginie en 1733.

Origin: Most probably France.

Engraving: Most probably after Charles Wilson Peale.

Possible Engraver: Augustin de Saint-Aubin (1736–1807) engraver to King Louis XVI.

Date of Creation: Unknown. Circa early 1800s.

Provenance: Thomas Truxtun Moebs collection.

 

An important addition in the catalogue raisonné of the images of George Washington.

 

Examples of the original engraving printed with embellishments by the printer Charles-Nicolas Cochin II (1715–1790) are scarce.
No copies are found in searching the National Portrait Gallery, the Library of Congress Online Catalog, the New York Public Library, the American Antiquarian Society, and other major institutional collections via Worldcat.
