Words of friendship and praise. “…it is anything but
pleasant traveling in a Texas stage. My admiration for this country increases
in proportion, as I acquire a knowledge of its advantages… I have given up the
law for the present. The profession is very much crowed in the state…only first
class lawyers, those of long standing are able to make a respectable living at
the practice. …I may visit Alabama again some day. …Teaching here is difficult
from that in the old state… a total want of discipline here. We had a perfect
set of “mustangs” to begin with & were forced to use the rod… …but it is a
