- - - “MacArthur was egotistical
and always controversial, so much so that his arrogance somewhat overshadows
his military brilliance; nevertheless he was one of the greatest generals of
World War II and of history; his
amphibious campaigns are classics of strategy, efficiency, and boldness, and
were also notable for their low casualty rates, evidence of both through
planning and concern for his men.”
- Dupuy. This is a marvelous wartime portrait of the
“American Caesar”, one of the nation's greatest military leaders. From mid-chest up and slight left profile,
General MacArthur is presented in the uniform of a lieutenant general. Set within an oval gilt frame, the image of
MacArthur exudes confidence and determination.
At right and left sides an eagle topped staff presents an unfurled
American flag. Along the entire bottom
of the print a line of American warships moves in formation. At lower right corner sky borne aircraft are
visible, the forward deck of their home carrier also depicted. At the bottom right corner is a shore
artillery battery. At bottom left
corner appears “8201”. Trevor N.
Dupuy's “The Harper Encyclopaedia Of
Military Biography,” pp. 462-463.
