THE HISTORY OF POLISH POTTERY
Polish Pottery had its beginnings in the early 1800's in the German provice of Silesia, now part of southwest Poland. At that time the farmers created the Bunzlauer stoneware, being inspired by the peacock feather with it's wonderful colors. This antique stoneware can be found in museums, antique shops and private collections throughout Europe. Today in the town of Boleslawiec, there are skilled artisans individually hand crafting each piece. They are producing traditional patterns of the last century, as well as more ornate designs called Unikat, or Signature, known around the world.
THE POTTERY STONEWARE
Special white clay is used, which is a mix of mineral substances that occur in sedimentary rocks and soils. It is soft when moist, but when fired above 1200 degrees Centigrade it becomes as hard as stone (thus the name) and non-porous. This intense firing makes it resistant to chips and breakage, causes it to retain heat, have even temperature throughout, (making it exceptional for serving tea) and makes each piece safe for the oven, microwave and dishwasher. The final glaze results in an ultra-smooth finish, enhancing its beauty and ease of cleaning.
DESIGN AND PRODUCTION
Traditional patterns use greens, blues and earth tones. Over the years additional colors and more intricacy has evolved into the highest level of design called Unikat. Each factory has their best artists applying these patterns, and tradition has brought about having these artists sign each piece - thus creating the Artistic (Signature) Patterns. The decorative motifs are applied to the surface with a variety of small stamps, sponges and hand painting - often with many hundreds of strokes per piece - each a little varied because of the human element. After the paint is applied, the piece is fired at 2100 degrees F or above. This brings about a ten percent reduction in size, eliminating any porousness in the clay - causing it to become stoneware rather than a ceramic piece - thus making it particularly sturdy and durable. Glaze is added before the second and final firing. All paints and glazes are free of lead and cadmium.
