Originally known as Saul, St. Paul was born (unknown date) in the city of Tarsus, Cilicia (modern day Turkey). He became known as Apostle of the Gentiles, martyr, and one of the greatest missionaries, mystics and theologians in the history of the Church.
He was a dedicated opponent of the "new Church", but had a great conversion experience while meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus.
From that point he traveled extensively bringing the Good News to the Gentiles near and far. His missionary efforts created much upheaval in some cities...he was even stoned and left for dead by a mob. Bet he and his traveling companions, Mark and Barnabas, also found much fertile spiritual soil among the Gentiles as he opened the door of faith to them. He became the most ardent missionary among the pagan populations of the entire Roman Empire.
He was arrested several times and placed in close confinement, suffering many difficulties with exceptional valor.
One of the most imaginative, eloquent, and passionate Christian writers, Paul was imprisoned, shipwrecked, beaten, flogged, stoned, banished and finally martyred (in about A.D. 67), for his faith. Throughout his missionary travels, we wrote extensively, and fully 1/3 of the New Testament is comprised of his letters.
His writing had a profound effect on the doctrines on grace, predestination, free will, baptism, and the attainment of Christian perfection. His Epistles are: Romans, First & Second Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, First & Second Thessalonians, First & Second Timothy, Titus, and Philemon.
