St. Peregrine was born in 1260 in Forli, Italy. Very devoted to the Blessed Mother, he received an apparition and she advised him to go to Siena and join the Order of Servites. After being sent by superiors to Forli to found a new house for his order, he developed a cancerous sore on his foot. The open wound repulsed those who came in contact with him but he continued his ministry of preaching, celebrating Mass and reconciling sinners to God.
When doctors suggested that his foot be amputated, Peregrine prayed about the problem and was suddenly and miraculously cured of every cancer symptom. Because of this, he is known as the patron of cancer patients.
St. Peregrine was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1776.
