Item description
Hannya is a kind of demons who appears on the stage of traditional Japanese Noh.
Noh is the oldest dramatic art in Japan,  having originally developed in the 14th century.
There exist about 250 Noh plays, which are grouped roughly into five main classifications according to subject matter.  These five classifications are shin the face of a woman turned demon through jealousy and anger.
Although Hannya is a very strong demon, she is also a tragic victim.
Many Japanese people think it a charm to ward off evil spirits.

This item made of Yakusugi(Japanese cedar).
Yakushima Island is the only place where the Yakusugi grows but, Yakushimam Island was designated as a World Heritage site in 1993 and since then, logging of Yakusugi has been banned.
This item will become shinier with age.

About Wood Engraving of Edo
It is said that the history of moku-chokoku began in the Asuka period (sixth century). When Buddihism was introduced to Japan, Moku-chokoku is the skill of Buddhist image carving.
In the Muromachi Period(1336-1573), Zen Buddhism which doesn't need Buddhist image became widespread among the people. Along with it, moku-chokoku developed to accommodate the architectural sculptures
The beautifully-sculptured columns and fanlights of the shrine Tosho-gu, a World Heritage Site, were carved by craftsman in the Edo period. World-renowned craftsman "Hidari Jingoro" was one of them.
In the Meiji period, decorative carvings expanded to ornament such objects as household furniture.
Only a chisel and knife is used to produce these works.
About Ikkyou Kitazawa
Ikkyou Kitazawa
Born in 1940 in Tochigi Prefecture .
His father is also a traditional craftsman of Tegaki Yuzen  ( dying of kimono).
In 1956(15 years old) He studied with Beizan Iijima(Master of Edo Moku-chokoku) at Asakusa.
In 1967 He was certified as a Master of Edo Moku-chokoku, and started his own company in Katsushika.
In 1998 He was certified as a Tokyo Traditional Craftsman by Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

In 1991, the KTCA was officially authorized by the Katsushika ward local Government to develop the traditional craft industry.  The cuwent membership of the association is more than 40 master craftsman including living National Treasures.
