Kekkai is used in Sado(Tea Ceremony). Another name for it is "Robyou". It means the border that separate the real world and Sado world. It is usually set between the host space and the guest space.
Kekkai is absolutely necessary to the sado way of seeing the world.
There are no rules to design Kekkai, but Japanese prefer simple designs.

This item made by traditional method "Sukashi-Bori".
Sukashi-Bori is a kind of Edo-Moku-chokoku.
This method brings out the beauty of woodgrain pattern.
This item made by Tadashi Shiota.
Tadashi Shiota, He is a leading expert in this method.
He mainly used a fine-tipped knife. This knife was handmade by him.
It is very sharp, so doesn't use any files to make the wood smooth.
He chose Nikko Sugi as material of this item. because Nikko Sugi has a gentle woodgrain pattern.
He also said "I always try to keep the natural features. After years this item will get an antique look."

About Wood Engraving of Edo
It is said that the history of moku-chokoku began in the Asuka period (sixth century). When Buddihism was introduced to Japan, Moku-chokoku is the skill of Buddhist image carving.
In the Muromachi Period(1336-1573), Zen Buddhism which doesn't need Buddhist image became widespread among the people. Along with it, moku-chokoku developed to accommodate the architectural sculptures
The beautifully-sculptured columns and fanlights of the shrine Tosho-gu, a World Heritage Site, were carved by craftsman in the Edo period. World-renowned craftsman "Hidari Jingoro" was one of them.
In the Meiji period, decorative carvings expanded to ornament such objects as household furniture.
Only a chisel and knife is used to produce these works.

Tadashi Shiota
Born in 1941 in Katsushika ward.
At the age of 17, He studied with Kouichi Matsumoto(Master of Sukashi-Bori).
At the age of 27,He started his own company in Katsushika.
In 2002 He was certified as the master of traditional craftsman by Katsushika Ward Office.

This store is managed by Katsushika Traditional Crafts Association (KTCA) in Katsushika ward which is located in eastern Tokyo.  This area has a reputation for producing many leading traditional master craftsman.
In 1991, the KTCA was officially authorized by the Katsushika ward local Government to develop the traditional craft industry.  The cuwent membership of the association is more than 40 master craftsman including living National Treasures.
This store was founded with the aim of introducing Japanese traditional crafts and culture to the world.  All goods are made by award winning master craftsman and all goods are guaranteed as genuine by Katsushika ward Government.  Because the goods are so rare and wonderful, even people living in Japan sometimes find it difficult to obtain them.
