100% positive feedback. The US Peace dollar coin, which has a metal composition of 90%
silver, was the coin chosen to succeed the US Morgan dollar coin.
Weighing 26.73 grams each, Peace dollar coins were struck in the San
Francisco, Denver and Philadelphia mints during the years 1921 to 1928
and again in 1934 and 1935. Having the inscription PEACE on its reverse
side, the Peace dollars were issued to commemorate the signing of the
bilateral agreement between the US and Germany which officially ended
World War I.
During the latter part of 1921, the US Commission of Arts organized a
competition for the design of the Peace dollar coin which was
eventually won by an Italian American designer by the name of Anthony De
Francisci. De Francisci’s winning coin design featured the head of
Liberty on the obverse and a bald eagle resting on a rock on the
reverse. US President Harding and US Mint Director Raymond Baker ordered
a few minor modifications done on De Francisci’s coin design before the
latter was approved for production.
On December 28, 1921, the first Peace dollar coin was struck in Philadelphia.
In 1935, four years before World War II erupted, the US government
ceased production of the coin. In 1964 however, Peace dollar coins were
made once again at the Denver mint but all of these were subsequently
destroyed.
