In Disgrace. Designed by Bessie Pease Gutman. The artist was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the late 1800s.
She earned many art prizes for her pictures. "In Disgrace" was published in 1935.
Bessie used her own daughter, Lucille and the neighbor's collie dog, Teddy, as models.
Gutmann's career spanned nearly five decades. It was not until the 1940s, when she began to suffer from poor vision, that she ceased painting.
She died in Centerport, New York in 1960 at the age of 84.
