Watercolor painting is a painter’s technique using water soluble pigments, which are transparent or matte and together with gum arabic and glycerine are bound to the paper. Watercolors are made by pulverizing powdered pigment to a binding agent, soluble in water. This agent consists of gum arabic, glycerine, ox gall and if necessary also gum tragacanth as thickener. Some color shades are also enriched with a filler, which can provide color with a white tone. Every pigment, on the condition that it is supposed to act as a water color, requires quite a different procedure and ratio of components, therefore manufacturing watercolors requires certain know-how based on many years of experience.

The watercolor painting technique allows flat wash, graded wash and wash-off with a brush. Soft brushes, preferably of sable hair, or e.g. an airbrush are used as the main tool. Painting should be done on moistened paper, blurred overlaps of color layers with extraordinary softness appear. Watercolor is applied almost exclusively on paper. Painting is done with an excess of water either by washing or by painting on a wet medium.

MONDELUZ watercolors are transparent with clear, pure tones, with a very low covering power. They are provided in pans/cakes. Their quality characteristics concerning covering power, light permanency and ingredients are always given on the labels of the particular watercolors.
